Hi,

Recently the foot brake on my 2003 E270 CDi W211 stopped making the ratchet sound when depressed. It still works OK - just silently!

Is this a fault?

I saw old posts referring to this but no-one answered the question so I know I am not the first to experience this.

Thanks in advance,

Terry

I believe that the ratchet is only a sound effect on the later E class, a sprag clutch is used to lock down the pedal and a plastic finger makes the noise, this is I believe quite a common failure and the spare part is not expensive, though I would like silent parking brake, the older E class 124 has a mechanical ratchet and pawl.

The ratchet sound is used to set the correct pedal travel

You can replace the plastic clicking part, and dead simple 50 in the picture, check the spring 30 too

Thanks

Once again the knowledge here comes to the fore.....

This also explains what the black plastic thing was that I found in the footwell - I wondered if they might be related!

So, for my clarity - if I am happy to leave it silent I don't need to do anything?

Thanks all,

Terry
