Since re-doing the cylinder head although its running ok It`s taking excessively long to reach just below 80 degrees. I see others have had failing stats and it looks like this is running too cool.

I`m going to change it anyway once the snow clears but what is the best way to refill the coolant after a stat change on a M271 to avoid airlocks?

Fear of overheating and bust head gaskets...

Any links or methods would great,

Thanks

Fill it up, leave the cap off and bring it up to temperature with the heater set for hot and no blower, watch out for any trapped air suddenly expanding and blowing coolant out.
Keep an eye on the coolant level as it warms and top up as required.

Dodgy thermostats can suddenly decide to stay closed especially if its a failure of the wax sensing element that has held it open, this will lead to over heating which might negate all your efforts on the cyl head, sort it asap.

If you observe a significant temperature rise turn the heater on max to assist cooling, the heater water circuit is not controlled by the stat and this might provide sufficient cooling in the current conditions to allow you to complete your journey.

Just leaving the filler cap off and squeezing the bottom hose will shift 95% it is mainly a self bleeding system

You need the blower on at least 1 or above or no water will flow thru heater, yes it'll self bleed but squeezing bottom hose will not normally bleed heater unit.

And, as has been said before on other posts, run the motor until the stat opens (if it's working right - otherwise the stat needs changing first!), then recheck the level. It will drop once the stat opens.

Personally, if I suspected the stat, i would change it before refilling.

The heater has its own pump and never been a problem with air in the heaters

Lots of them don't work and you'll never spot the difference. :)

Thanks to all, great replies.

Changed the stat today and ran it till it opened an let the flow through to the radiator, now on a short drive its up to temp and maintaining around 90 degs.

Marked difference to before when after 10 miles it was barely over 60degs.

The old stat in boiling water still worked but you could see a gap in the valve seat when ran under cold water. So I`ll keep an eye on it and hope alls well.

What temp would you expect the radiator fan to cut in?
