Scary to think that you only have to go back about 10 years and sat-nav was bearly used in civilian life. Soon we'll all have it on our mobile phones, along with the internet, a digital camera, e-mail, etc...

Where will it end? It's exciting, eh?:D

I'm hoping they'll update the Maps app on the iPhone to support this, then not only will my phone be able to work as a iPod, Internet browser, BlackBerry, camera, autotune system, lolcat downloader, YouTube viewer/downloader, dictionary, Skype phone, photo editer, TV guide, speedomiter, translater, games console, and cinema checker, DVD player (well it plays films and TV shows I save on it anyway)... But it'll be a sat-nav too!

Sat-nav for mobiles is pretty cheap already.
I use n-drive (like tom-tom but 3d buildings) google maps which give directions (but not audibly), viewranger for off-roading as it displays ordanance survey maps at 1:25 000 scale and all with gps.
the only thing i havnt found for my phone is marine navigation charts but it will just be a matter of time.
With a 3.7" omled display, stereo speakers, hd video recording,hd and multi format playback,tv out,8 megapixel camera producing superb quality and does so much more than an iphone.
Oh yeah, it even makes phone calls ;)

after a bit of reading it may appear that the free google application is only for android systems and is network based so getting an accurate fix whilst driving may be difficult as it may be some distance behind where you actually are.
the dedicated device wil be more accurate and will be able to tell you what lane to be in whereas the google system will not.
For a free system though there is nothing to complain about.

hi. the phone is a samsung i8910 or omnia hd.
it is exactly the same s60 v5 symbian operating system as the top end nokias so can share applications.
I paid £25 for the large area of View ranger i have. http://www.viewranger.com/ is for symbian.
If you have windows mobile then memory map can be used. You can import your own maps/charts on your pc with memory map.
After using the two would say viewranger has the edge "out in the field".

Ahh I used S60 v5 on my 5800... Was a horrible experience. Sold the ****** thing about a month after buying it.

I'd choose a Windows Mobile phone if I where you.

Or you could get the iPhone, there are plenty of nav apps for that.

There's an iphone satnav app coming out soon that just uses arrows transposed on live images through the camera.

NB Ann Summers are also bringing out an app that will help a chap find a lady's G-spot....

.....tw@tnav will be available in time for Christmas.

I like the imaginative title.

Does that describe the driver or the destination?

A supposed advantage of symbian over windows is when it comes to media, much faster. Symbian has also become open source (not exclusive to nokia anymore) so many more developers will be writing software.
The 5800 is primarily a music phone and a smallish screen so a bit unfair to compair it to s60 devices with much larger screens.
I-phone can only deal with software exclusively for the phone whereas symbian can use divx, wmv, real player, mp3,s etc.
The phone i have has a supposed 800mhz processor and over 4x the amount of ram that the iphone has so not really surprising it can do so much more.
I believe Sony erissons latest large touch screen with 12 mp camera has just jumped on the symbian bandwagon.
at the end of the day its down to personal preference, just like windoze or mac. Each has their own advantages.

I have owned quite a few Symbian devices: Nokia 6600, Nokia N-Gage, and Nokia 5800. I also know someone who had a N91, who agrees with me.

I think back in the day, the downfalls of Symbian were excusable, but in this modern world of Internet smartphones which need to be as much like computers as possible, Symbian just don't cut it. Have you used the N97 after using the iPhone? You'll soon see the difference. Oh, and the 5800 and N97 have the same OS. In fact, apart from slightly different physical appearence and keyboards, and cameras, they are basically the same phone anyway.

And what phone do you have which has 4x the RAM of the iPhone? If you're referring to the 3GS, that means your phone apparently has over 1GB RAM, which I highly doubt.

Also, the amount of megapixels a camera phone has does not equal quality, and more megapixels can even lower quality of the camera.

AS regards camera pixels, it all depends on the sensor size.
If the mfr. tries to ram loads of pixels onto a small sensor then you get lots of "noise" (grain in film days).

They are now seeing the light (!) which is why some of the recently launched Nikon and Canons have not too many pixels (and in the case of the G11) or less than before.

I expect the same principles apply to cameras in phones.

This appears to assume i think more megapixels = better pictures which i certainly did not suggest.
I only stated that this particular phone is one of the best at photos after also having many other top end devices over the years.
Lenses, sensor size/type (ccd/cmos) and software all contribute to image quality, take panasonic with its superb leica lenses but use to be let down badly with panasonics firmware.
This topic is wandering off the beaten track somewhat (maybe my fault )as i was originally stating that this is a good device for various sat nav applications, and since im here-a superior battery life due to its amoled screen ;)

I already have both the TomTom and Navigon apps on my iPhone , besides the free Google maps app . In addition to those , I have the iOS Maps app , air navigation and numerous others each with their own feature set . I haven't seen one with marine charts either , but have not looked for this .

I don't particularly want my iPhone 'to work as a Blackberry' - I like that fact that my iPhone works , full stop . Everyone I know with Blackberries has endless trouble , if they can get the darn things to work at all .

I have a Blackberry Storm touch screen on Vodafone.

Does exactly what it says on the tin.

Gets my Hotmail, my business mail, internet browser, decent camera, bluetooth, decent mp3 player, Vodafone find and go SatNav, text messages, syncs both ways to MS Outlook including contacts and calendar, displays email attachments, alarm clock, instant messenger, even makes calls. Probably does more.

Bored yet?

Brilliant piece of kit, will get the latest one with wifi when my upgrade is due.
