There's a sound coming from my car when I brake, that sounds like my pads are worn. I got the rear pads changed a couple of months ago and the sound seems to be coming from the front, so I assume the front pads need changing. Also, the "brake lining wear" message is on. This has shown up on and off since before the rear pads were changed. But it's on constantly now.

My googling skills must suck because I can't seem to find the correct part for my car. Could anyone let me know which pads I need? I know the guy in the motor factors should know but just to make sure they're selling me the right part and so I know how much they should cost approx.

For the error message. Can the sensor be reset? I heard somewhere that it needs to be replaced.

There is no re set for the lamp on.

Once the sensors and pads are replaced of fitted correctly the lamp will not come on.

There are 2 systems in use, the single wire and the twin. to know what type you have just turn on the ignition without touching the brake pedal,,if the lamp is on, then the twin wire if it only comes on when you press the brake pedal and stays on then probably the single wire type.

I fail to see exactly what is happening for if you had new brake pads recently on the rear,,then the front pads must have been very worn for the lamp to have come on shortly after, if it was the front pads worn out

Message only appears after pressing the pedal, so looks like single wire.

What happened originally is the warning message came on shortly before my NCT (Irish equivalent to your MOT) and the car failed because the rear pads were worn. I got them changed, got the car retested and it passed. I've read that the warning message can come up before the pads actually need to be changed. So is it possible that the front pads were worn enough to set off the sensor put still within the limits to pass the NCT?

Is there a sensor on the front & rear?

The rears seldom have a sensor,I forgot that :D so this looks like a straight front pad change job, and simple at that.

You will need to change the sensors as the plastic insulation has gone now.

I do not have the part numbers for the pads,,but your parts supplier should know. the calipers look like ATE to me

Is there a sensor on each wheel? Or only one on either the left or right side?

Yes, the sensors usually sit in the middle of the pads so they should all have sensors

sometimes if the old sensor is in good order, you can simply remove and replace that to new pads but it may still give you the error on the screen is it has any wear/problem

So I got the pads & sensors changed on Friday. Everything was grand for the weekend. Noise gone, warning message gone. However, Monday morning the BAS/ESP lamp came on. It stayed on all day Monday but it did go out Tuesday evening. It was back on again this morning but just went a drive a few minutes ago and it's gone off again.
The strange thing is that there is no warning message at all on the display when the warning lamp comes on and if I scroll through the different screens it says "no malfunctions".
Could this be in any way related to changing the pads/sensors or just a new problem and a coincidence that it happened so soon after changing them?

It could be a coincidence that it has come on but one of the wheel speed sensors may hav been damaged when they fitted the brakes.

As for the malfunction you wont get one as there is a warning light that has come.

I would be taking it straight back to where you had the brakes done was it a main dealer

Yes I think that the speed sensor could have been disturbed or not seating correctly

Is there generally a speed sensor located on the right & left or is there just one? I'll bring it back after work today. It was an indy, not main dealer.

Thanks. Ya, he probably didn't notice.
If there was a problem with one of the sensors would the speed signal not be lost? The speedo is working ok.

It seems that the ABS is reading OK and I thought about that, some components like the ESP may not read it if a little out. It is so hard on these things,,just a little dust falling down, but very hard to say

Sorry, just a couple of quick questions.

What year did Merc. introduce the sensors?

When changing the pads is there any benefit in going for larger pads from the next model up ie 420 on 320 or would that scupper the set up / require bigger calipers or give no real benefit?

PS Ford Rapid fit changed mine last time as hourly rt less than MB - caliper wasn't tightened enough and flew off locking up front wheel on motorway!

They have always had pad wear sensor, but they would not help in your case. The pre 2000 cars had a single wire where the pin was plastic coated,,when the pad wore through the plastic the lamp came on once you pressed the brake pedal. With the newer 2 wire system, when the pads are worn it cut the wires and the lamp come on, and stays on.

Now the daft thing with this system is the the sensor can be plugged in to the chassis, but it does not have to be plugged into the pad,,so if you caliper came off,it would pull the pin out of the pad, and you would never know

They plugged it in to the computer and what showed up was a transition sensor in the gearbox. Plausible?
