As I apply the front brakes there is a juddering sound and a slight thumping feeling throught the brake pedal. The brakes are still quite effective .
The car had been left standing for a while, and I was advised to give the car a bit of a drive around giving the brakes a bit of exercise. This did work for a while but the problem has returned. The car is a a C class avantgarde 220 diesel estate first registerd in Sept 04.
Am I going to have to change the brake discs, and ,if so, any ideas about the cost?
Many thanks,
Mike

Hello, no I'm not going to do myself. I was going to either a main dealer or a Merc specialist not too far away.

Sounds like a warped disc to me. Had this on my S320 and symptoms were the same. Easy job for an indi to do.

plus about £120 labour to fit.

Do use an indie, there is no sense in paying MB money for this job. Do not find an expensive indie though:D

It is possible that the discs are slightly warped or suffering from patchy corrosion.

When left standing the discs tend to rust in where they are exposed and high points can develop.

If not too bad periods of gentle braking whilst powering the vehicle (depress the brake pedal until the brakes start to bite the and use the accelerator to keep the speed up) followed by some heavy braking can clear them up. Just remember to allow the brakes to cool between attempts.

Depends on how much rust there is on the hub and calipers, its easy to put 30 mins into cleaning one front caliper and hub so to do properly then an hour per front corner.

Or if you dont want anything cleaned and just a straight swap then 10 mins per corner.

I got my front discs from brakes international on the web dirty great big vented std jobs not genuine and they have stopped me several times from some very very fast speeds and are still fine.

Got new discs and pads for wifes w203 from the same place.

Discs roughly £40 each and pads similiar, for both cars.

I will meet you at 40 mins, the caliper face and mounting face along with the hub, is only any loose stuff that is taken off
