Front pad knocking

I just replaced front discs and pads on my A250. After driving forwards then stop ,reverse and stop I get a loud clunk from the front pads. Happens again after driving in reverse ,stop,then going forwards then stop. Clunk. I know it`s the pads moving in the carriers. I measured the length of the pads at 144mm. The length of the carrier that the pads slot in is 147.8mm. I can actually slide the pads back and forth in the carriers replicating the noise. Autodoc lists every make of pad at 144mm which is what I`ve got . Why have I almost 4mm back and forth play in the pads ???? No wear on the carriers.

I'd be taking the pads back for a refund. I know, l know.

What did the old pads measure ?

Are they OEM pads ?

Sometimes there is a small shim that goes in the caliper slot (at both ends) where the pads fit into, is it possible that it has disappeared ?

There was no shim when I removed the old pads. Old pads unknown make. I didn`t measure the old pads but they never made any noise.

Buy cheap buy twice. Seen this so many times with aftermarket pads, slightly undersized and rattle in carrier. Buy mb to be sure of proper fitment.
