most likely that the bulb behind it is blown, shine a torch up to it do you see what looks like the current temperature showing ?

not too hard to change once you have the tools to remove the instrument panel (remove with the key out otherwise the SRS airbags may get the idea that theres a problem)

replace the bulb and all should be ok

cheers

Cars with SRS Always take out the SRS fuse, or better still under standard safety rules the Battery should be disconected and wait 15 mins before working on the car.

When the weather gets better you will find the SRS fuse under the hood in the main fuse box near the bulkhead. you will find a label in the lid, telling which fuse does what.

If you chose to remove the SRS fuse ,remember to replace it before you next switch on the ignition or you will get a fault light which will have to be cleared by someone with the necessary equipment, ave. charge £15 to £45 .
Instrument panel easy to remove with the correct tools, available on Ebay.or from the dealer. Haynes manual says to remove the steering wheel first; but i have found this is not necessary as you can reach behind the panel after you have pulled it out; to release the wiring clips and unplug the wiring ; then slide the panel out to the side.
Hope this is of help,
George.

i have the tools (bought them from the local mercedes dealer), very cheap too, approx 15 quid. both are 'T' shaped and you slide them in either side of the top of the instrument panel then turn to 'grip' then pull out gently, as the above poster said you don't need to remove the steering wheel, just man handle the instrument panel over and back and it will come out in the direction of the gear stick (at least mine did). remove the clips holding the two main 'wiring' harnesses into the back of the unit, they slide up to allow removal of those plugs, then you have the unit free for removal.

once out locate the bulbs (small in size cant remember the voltage or anything)

its a good idea to replace ALL of them at the same time (remember that) as you dont want to stick it back in after replacing one bulb and one week later three more fail (murphys law)

if you want me to take a photo of the tools i will and post here

cheers

You can often get the instrument panels out by just pushing from the rear if you can get you hand up there, and there is no risk of damage. I know that you have not warmed up yet but it is easier in the cold weather due to shrinkage of the unit.

Might be worth checking that you have a temperature sensor! On the W124 this was optional, and hence if there is no sensor, the read out window will be blank. On one of my cars (E300 estate), the sensor can be seen mounted just below the number plate on the front air dam, while on the other (250TD estate), there is no sensor.

John

Hi,
One small spanner in the works. Depending on the year, the C180 didn't necessarily have an outside temp gauge. We had a '95 C180 and that didn't. My '95 C220 did. I believe it was an optional extra, but the dash was pretty much the same so just blanked out. Try that russian web site and see whether it is listed on the spec.
