Thanks for your replies. My car is under warranty at the garage i got it from and in taking it tommorow see what they say may have to take it an indy as suggested above to diagnose the problem then go the garage so they can pay for it my guess from my research on here is the maf sensor or o2 sensor.

In general either of those will bring up the engine management light if there is an issue.

So apparently there nothing wrong with it and its running sweet. I beg to differ how much cab i expect to pay at a local independent merc specialist to check it over for a second opinion?

They’d charge initially for a Star diagnostic, but that’s what the local Mercedes dealer presumably did?. That can vary £65 and upwards.

Depends what sort of driving your doing, if it's all urban stop start short journeys from cold then 28 mpg could be about right.
It's only going to improve getting it out for a long run and up to constant speed.
Guess you've checked the obvious like tyre pressures and if the brakes are sticking?
The idling for that long will not be good, does it not block the DPF filter?

That’s why- like we keep saying to you- you need to get the problem diagnosed properly. Just guessing and saying “my BMW did this” won’t get to the root cause of the poor mpg.

In addition, GlosRick asked a question. What sort of driving are you doing?

Could even be the DPF is blocked and it's constantly trying to regenerate, hence the poor mpg.

Ring the MB garage they took it to and ask if they can still print out the STAR computer record for the car (assuming you can print it out at a later date ?? ) at least it will confirm they did actually test it .

Totally agree with this.
My E350 has only been around town and short trips for a couple of months now and mpg down to 28. Went visiting family this weekend with a 150 mile drive, a good motorway blast and has just returned 48mpg.
I'm sure its because of cold weather and town driving.

Wouldn't STAR have shown up all these issues ?

Jesus that doesn't sound right at all . I wonder as a test if you get the car warmed up and zero the clock on a motorway and maintain a constant 70mph for say 40 miles you should see a +50mpg ....if you don't then you must have a problem . Did you get a copy of the Star printout ??

I have a 350 petrol slk. I do 12 miles to work and 12 miles back.
About 7 of it is motorway.
If i drive normal it does 28 - 30mpg.
Drops to 25 if i get my foot down a bit.
I would be gutted to get what you are out of a 2.1 diesel.

What year was your BMW? Did it have s DPF?
The type of driving it sounds like you're doing (you still haven't answered the question about type of driving - 12 miles in a city or on a motorway) isn't ideal for any DPF equipped diesel as a regen will struggle to complete.

I know i keep coming back to my bmw but its all i got to compare.

It was a 57 plate 2.0L m sport £20 a week i used to put in that and i would still have a little left over and i drove it woth my foot down all the time and was gettimg 41.5 mpg over 50 on motorway.

My driving route is about a mile on the motorway and rest of the way nice steady 30 mph drive not a great deal of stopping and starting.

Yes my bmw had a dpf and i know all about it i have taken my merc for a 5 mile drag up the motorway twice this week. The only thing im doing diffo in the merc is driving like my nan drives her car. I should be at worst getting the same out my merc as i was with the bmw. If not better with it being a blutech

Have you booked it in for fault diagnosis yet?
