Hey guys
Had my SLK 350 (auto) 3 days now and i must say the fuel consumption seems very low , around town i`m getting 14mpg !!! this seems very low , one of the reasons i got rid of my BMW M3 was because of low fuel consumption about 15mpg around town..

Just thought i would ask other peeps comments on this.

I assume the M3 would have had a similar 6cyl 3 litreish engine? so i cant see how you would be expecting a large improvement if any. the SLK will be a simialr weight to an M3 i would think give a take the weight of a large person.

but my 5.5 gives me around 20mpg round town. which i think is terrible. so a 3.5 giving out less either means your fuel is leaking or you are driving in terrible conditions!

maybes someone can shed a birghter light on this

at 0530am having looked at some figures of both cars quoted above, taken from the topgearwebsite, they are almost identical in fuel consumption with the benefit going to the M3 of 1mpg.

Town fuel consumption is almost impossible to quantify. For some, its short periods of slow movement between long periods of sitting going nowhere (e.g London). For others, its a 20-40mph trundle, being stopped every min or so by a traffic light. From an official MPG viewpoint, both are 'urban' but really they are chalk and cheese. Any time spent stationary is a killer for mpg, but its exponentially worse, the bigger the engine. That's why the 1 litre stuff really scores round town as it uses bugger all on idle. Once on the move, the smaller engine has to work harder keep up, so the difference reduces - hence a 2.0 is no more economical than a 3.2 on a run, but would use less in heavy traffic.
As I spend 3 hours a day on the M62, if I can keep the wheels turning, I can return 40+. If I have to stop in a jam for more than a couple of minutes, that drops to mid 30s and below.
I suspect Slinky trundles, and you have to queue a lot.

Assuming the car's new the engine will be pretty tight. I'd expect fuel consumption to improve as it frees up over the new 10K or so

It'll need a few Italian Tune-ups to get the engine just right!

Cold weather will make a difference, even more so around town.

I had a BMW M635csi which in the summer would return 16/17 mpg around town but when cold (like the last few days) I would only get 14/15.

Dont worry. The official MB figure for urban consumption is about 20 mpg but this will undoubtedly have been measured on vehicles with far higher mileage than yours. My SL averaged about 17 mpg overall when new and now does about 23 mpg after 16k miles.
