I do not think that chipping the engine will improve the MPG as such as depending on how much you chip you will be using 98 oct petrol, the only way to reduce fuel is LPG

If you have to ask, you can't afford it... why not go for a diesel?

scary MPG ! You must do no mileage or have a massive wallet to even be considering it. Also, isn there anywhere convenient for the LPG tank, or do you lose the boot in the process. If economy is even a consideration, don't touch it. Get a 270CDI instead.

As the others say if you have to ask about fuel consumption don't buy it! With LPG your fuel costs come down into the same bracket as diesel engined vehicles. You've got to weigh up the cost of installation for which you can buy a vast amount of petrol. You will lose either load space or the spare wheel to the LPG tank. I know that you will also be in the realms of the much larger LPG units to serve the power output of the 4.3. I've not seen any LPG conversions on the ML but on the 4.4 (BMW) Range Rover the quality conversion is around £3-4K.
Re the chipping:- the only way you get better MPG is because you can hold the higher gears longer - this is generally of no advantage on an auto box as the shifts are made for you.
