Fuel Filter Replacement

Can anybody tell me how to change the fuel filter on a W210 e320cdi?

Any torque settings/bleeding etc?

Ok, just unscrew cap as in the link. withdraw oil filter

Remove the under cover from engine.

Take out drain plug from sump, and catch the oil in a suitable container.

leave to drain 10 mins.

Refit plug, if washer damaged replace it.

Drop new filter in, lubricate rubber washer with engine oil and do up hand tight.

Fill up with oil, run engine and check that drain plug is not leaking. Replace cover.

Re check oil level and adjust.

Wash off the oil that has run down your arm, and use some greaser spray on the driveway to remove oil stains.

Take wife out for a meal using some of the money that you have saved

Fuel filter is under engine covers. Two types normally; paper and canister. Yours is probably a paper type.

Remove the screw cap.

Remove filter

Repace seal inside cap (very important)

Repace filter

fill resevoir with diesel (otherwise it will struggle to start)

Refit screw cap (hand tight)

crank engine (may have to do it a few times)

C55 - when you say fill the resevoir with diesel, do you meen the bit that the filter actually sits in?

Yes. Otherwise you will be cranking forever

New to this forum so hello to everyone
I have a 110 Vito.
Will follow previous advice when changing fuel filter but was wondering why it's necessary to fill it? and/or why the pump can't deliver sufficient pressure as with other makes?

It is better to fill it to help avoid an air lock in the system

It does not pump air very well. Fuel is ok but air is not. You will nedd to fill the filter up. It will save your starter and battery.

I could save you some time also, so you could get out sooner.
After having my C180 for 9yrs where oil changes could be done in your sunday best, and changing to my E300 td where it is not so straight forrward, I decied to take a leaf out of the garage owners handook and suck out the oil thro the dipstick. Shop bought kit for this is expensive so made my own from the following.
1 x drill operated pump £2.50
1 old washing machine hose cut clos to one end to act as discharge hose
1 metre of 4/5mm od nylon tube
1 small piece epoxy putty
Bond the nylon tube with putty into the short end of cut hose, this is your suction pipe.
Fit onto drill pump suction port
Fit longer piece of washing machine hose to discharge port.
Connect hand drill (electric) to pump spindle
insert nylon tube down dipstick pipe
Prime pump with eggcupful of clean oil
Operate pump slowly to pick up suction then raise speed to about 1500rpm
Discharge waste oil into suitable container.
Stand back and whistle appropriate tune for the 6 /7 minutes it takes to pump out sump.
Then off you go

I'm quite lucky in a way, my local garage has the necessary tackle for getting the oil out of the dipstick hole and they are more than happy to let me use it, after all that extra 10 litres keeps them warm a bit longer in the winter. I shall drain it from the plug this time though as i'm getting a small leak from there so it will require a new washer.

Tip for the copper washer. Heat it up till it is cherry red then drop it in water. It anneals the washer and makes for a better seal.

First things first, if you value your life, do not smoke or allow any one near you to smoke while replacing the fuel filter. Replace the fuel filter on a cold engine to avoid the possibility of the fuel hitting an exhaust manifold or pipe and igniting. It only takes a small spark to ignite the fuel and cause a disaster.

Very interesting, never heard of changing your oil sucking it out before.

Anybody know where the fuel filter is on the ML270cdi, not had any covers off yet to have a look see, it needs a B service in 4700 miles so may do some of the simple jobs myself to keep the cost down a bit.
Plucking up courage to change the rear discs and pads.....

I have replaced fuel filter several times and I have never filled with fuel. It only takes 10-20 second of cranking and everything works Ok
