I have a 1996 E230. I filled the Car with £30. I got approx 150 miles. Is this about right !!

2nd issue. I can start the car and the car shows 1/2 full, drive a few yards and its in between 1/4 and half. Stop at lights and its back at 1/2.

Is this a fault, dodgy connection etc.

Please advise and suggest way to fix please.

Most probably a dodgy tank sender unit, try cleaning it by using some injector cleaner next time you fill up with a couple of gallons of fuel, if that dont work blame malcolm Tv
and a quick calculation would assume in the region of 27mpg, dependant on price of your fuel..so its probably ok for your car, next time check how many litres you're getting for your £30..

When adding the injector cleaner ensure the tank is filled to a point ABOVE the point where the reading plays up. To make sure I brim the tank and then the entire range of the sender is cleaned.

Hi,
Do you run it on supermarket fuel by any chance as mine plays up in my C230K when I started using it.
Back to branded fuel and its ok.

Hi,

My CLK 230K has been run almost exclusively on ASDA fuel from new and in the early days the fuel gauge did play up. As soon as I started adding an injector cleaner every 6000 miles the gauge started to behave itself. The fuel gauge senders are still the original ones after 200,000+ miles and the engine always feels smoother and more responsive after the treatment.

The cleaner adds 1/2p per litre to the cost of the fuel and an ASDA Mastercard gets me 2p off per litre. I believe the low level of detergents in the supermarket fuel allows deposits to build up on the sender units which are then removed by the injector cleaner. Otherwise there have no other detrimental effects from using supermarket fuel. Average fuel consumption is approx 30 mpg.

For me the argument in favour of using cheap fuel + injector cleaner is made.

The one I have used for the past 150,000 miles is Wynns, available from Halfords at £4.99. Results have been entirely satisfactory.
