When purchasing DOT4 brake fluid from the Merc parts counter, don't rely on the parts people to know how much is required.

Thats why I have 2 spare 1 litre bottles of brake fluid from the 3 that they sold me :( I thought it was a bit excessive at the time!

I think they must have supplied me enough for the entire system! It took less than a litre to pump through the lines.

Thankfully the old fluid was nice and clean so no leaky pistons :) I also changed the coolant, 3 litres of coolant is plenty. Dead simple to drain as well, no faffing around underneath the car. And the old coolant was spotless as well, good cars these aren't they :) At 180,000 miles I've never heard an engine so smooth (idling it to get the thermostat open).

Somewhere deep in the depths, probably deeper than the chasm that Gandalf fell into.

I didn't bother in the end. Just disconnected both radiator hoses (dead dead simple), lowered the bottom hose to a point below the engine, took the reservoir cap off, bunged a load of cold water through it in all directions to flush out any rubbish (there wasn't any), then reattached the lot and filled it back up. Takes a while for the air to bubble out, and you have to sit there waiting for the thermostat to open so you can finish topping it up, but its a doddle tbh.
