What is the position with the ML range

Your car is too new to be affected too much, the odd car still comes through with a rusty spot, but in general things are getting better

Your cars aren't galvanised, get over it, they have a zinc rich primer under the colour coat, which technically allows MB to get away with 'galvanised', the panels themselves have never seen a zinc dip......legally galvanised only means 'covered in zinc' even if its just paint.

The best anti rust treatment is a process called E Coat. this is applied by electric deposition as the first coat of paint by the manufacturer. Most car manufactures now carry out this process to combat rust.

Zinc is a strange product, not easy to get paint to adhere to it when new.

GALVANISING OF MERCEDES CARS

Some long while ago I posted info about the galvanising of MB cars which I got from an unimpeachable source high up in Mercedes UK. The subject comes up often so I thought it might be worth posting again as threads disappear so fast.

I set out the picture –model by model- below. Moderators may care to consider making this a sticky for a while as it is of general interest, not widely available, and because new threads are posted so often now that threads disappear from the front page in the twinkling of an eye.

C CLASS -203 series- saloon and estates: -

All steel panels were galvanised from Quarter 2 2003 production onwards.
During the previous six months (Q4 2002 + Q1 2003) the process was
gradually introduced on the production line and therefore some vehicles
were galvanised during this lead-up period, but not all.

E CLASS -211 series- saloon and estates: -

All steel panels were galvanised from Quarter 1, 2003, production onwards.
During the previous quarter (Q4, 2002) the process was gradually introduced
on the production line and therefore some vehicles were galvanised during
this lead-up period, but not all.

CLK CLASS – 209 series

All steel panels were galvanised from Quarter 2 2003 production onwards.
During the previous six months (Q4 2002 + Q1 2003) the process was
gradually introduced on the production line and therefore some vehicles
were galvanised during this lead-up period, but not all.

SL CLASS –R230 series

This is not so easy to be specific because the change-over period
continued right through into Q3 2004. So although many SLs were galvanised in early 2004 it is not till the end of the third quarter of 2004 that one can say that all were galvanised.

S CLASS –220series and CL class 215 series.

The S class and CL class are built of a combination of aluminium and steel. For the
aluminium components there is, of course, no galvanising process.

All steel panels were galvanised from Quarter 1 2003 production onwards.

I hope members find this helpful.
Good stuff mate. Do you have any info for the CLS? I couldn't find reference to it in the thread. Thanks.

This could explain why on my previous CLK (W208) rust spread like wildfire to the point where it was failing MOT's because of it, , and on my current CLK (w209) there is not a trace of rust on it.

I don't think it does, my old CLK w209, started to rust when it was only 4.5 years old, fixed under warranty, and then the rust returned when it was still only 6 years old. If yours has no rust, you're very lucky, plenty w209 are rust buckets despite being galvanised.
