In the 90's I worked for the company that created Gap Insurance. The main reason it was created was that in the event of a Contract Hire car being written off there was a huge gap between the write off value and the outstanding financial commitment. Gap insurance was originally set up to protect our Contract Hire customers at Hartwell Motor Contacts (HMC) but was taken up by the overall Motor Finance Industry. HMC has since swallowed up by Debis Finance which was then the financial arm of MB.
