It was after midnight....(Correction 2:05am, so the builder has just informed me) that the poor chap left, the Missus phoned me to say he had fallen asleep in his truck. I felt bad phoning him to ask how things were going and did he want another coffee :D
Anyway job done and looking good and smooth :)

And no splatters on the M5
Now the sand is arriving for the bricklayer for Monday, all seems to be going along at great guns now :D

Just looking at your house 00slk it seem the extension adjoining the garage is solid build (With the blue doors)looking at the brickwork formation but you main part or original part looks to be cavity by the brickwork so you could probably get it pumped for insulation. Your builder will confirm this or not.

There is no cavity in the main house, just double brick which doesn't have any gap Kev as far as we can make out.

Some brickies like to mix their own mortar, tubs have a lot of retarder in them from what I mind and takes a good while to go off.
Thought there would have been a cavity 00slk with the formation of the brickwork but strangely not. Concrete can be very slow to go off with temperatures at this time of the year and plastic underneath helps it retain the water to slow down the setting process as well as stopping it drying too quick and cracking in warm weather by retaining water

I think you maybe right about the house having a cavity Kev. The main part of the house most likely has and the porch and laundry have the flat roof and are very cold during the colder periods.
The sand has been delivered and is a lovely mustard colour. The Brickies has a job that was going to be finished on Friday but took longer and had to get it finished today.....in the rain. Scheduled for tomorrow morning now and the scaffolding arranged too.

Sand wont be mustard for long once cement is added:) A day extra will do no harm to concrete that could still be a little green due to added cure time needed at this time of the year;)

Buy a 3m x 3 m Gazebo
where it fits is where they work!

There's plenty of block to hold it down and raise it up, I put a "fall arrest net" over them to stop the wind taking them off.

Braving the cold the Bricky's turned up this morning but struggled with the cold at -1 with the cement. I tried to finish off painting the RSJ for the other block building but too had to give up as the steel girder was freezing and making it impossible for the paint to cover

Hopefully be a little warmer here tomorrow. There is still snow on the ground here :(

There's no point doing any cement / mortar work in freezing conditions - the water freezes before the cement/mortar goes off and you will end up raking it out and repointing...

10 out of 10 for attempt 00slk, worst time of year for trying to push ahead with a project. I know the feeling as generator wouldn't start for running plant yesterday, -5 all day and plant and water was frozen solid so no point even if generator did start

The Bricky's are back today but unfortunately the bricks are soaking wet and they have had to go through the lot to find some that are dry enough to use. The contractor is going to supply a big sheet and industrial heater, all the bricks are being moved to the block kennel for drying out. So looks like a couple of days before the guys will be back in action.
When I ordered all the materials the project was supposed to be getting under way, though the contractor doing it for me is also a car guy is helping out with minimising costs for me in getting back as and when time permits which is great for me as it leaves me extra money for other luxuries like a second 2 poster and buying more cars (though the latter is now on hold, Missus' orders, Ahe Alex ;)) and knocking down the block building to rebuild to a more substantial quality :D unfortunately the materials have been sitting for far too long hence the wetness  Well you have to have some compromise along the way and as you say Kev not the best time of year either for this type of project. Mind you there were some hold ups on the way too :(

snow is the worst for soaking into blocks, and you did have a few issues with utilities etc to delay things, always good to keep your sand covered too if its not going to be used straight away.

Thanks Kev, I think they have used up much of the sand now. The next delivery will be when they're to go again. :)

Amazing just how fast those bricks have dried out since 4pm yesterday after the bricks were transferred to the Kennel and a 4 bar heater put in with them over night

The heater and makeshift door where left on all day and tonight it'll stay on to help dry out the new batch :D
After tomorrow they should have the build ready for the Scaffolder next week.
