That reminds me of a little discussion over gas pipe supply sizes, the one on my side of the meter had to be bigger than the one on their side of the meter.

Privatisation also allowed the people who often put the supply in the property to retire to the street.

Sid never told us that.

With the past 7 houses we have lived in 4 have had inadequate garaging for my desire to own more than 3 cars at any one time and not many properties have 3 + car garaging. However I have always found a way of getting around this by either building new or extending the garages.
Our current house was no except so once the builders visited to look at what I wanted it was decided to demolish the 2 car garage and start fresh for the 4 car garage. This was February 2019 and so the project begun.
After the architect drew up the plans and the council granted planning permission things would get underway.
Come July 2020 and finally we went from this.......

And that's where things have come to a stop, as the gas pipes that were running around the existing garage will be in the way for the footings and extra thickness of concrete. The gas pipes didn't come in from the main road as was indicated. It's now going to cause up to 10 weeks delay now for any further progress. I will keep things up dated as they happen.
I was renovating/extending an older property once and found as you did, my property was fed from a neighbouring gas feed and it was iron pipework, I was talking to a gas engineer friend about the pipework obstructing the footings and he advised me to call the networks emergency gas leak number and report a smell of gas, then they'll HAVE to do something about it! I did and they arrived within the Hour, the upshot was they had to isolate and disconnect the gas supply to the iron pipework immediately, surprisingly they could smell the gas as well :geek: and reinstate with a dedicated new yellow HDPE feed from the main street outside, we had to make arrangements for hot water and cooking for two days while this work was carried out but as the MIL was in a cottage next door and the BIL was in a cottage adjoining the rear courtyard, it wasn't much of an inconvenience, a far more convenient option than waiting for their works scheduling and all the complications that would entail.

You have my deepest sympathy for an unforeseen problem not of your own making... and of course the power suppliers couldn't give a toss about you and your costs! Our daughter had a house built and they found the drains bore no resemblance to the plans which is typical (and of course has no comeback)! It goes back to the big share-out (or lack of) mapping info when the utility companies were privatised. So they win £ big time even when they're wrong because of course they have the temerity to charge you to inspect any work done even though they've been wrong for donkey's years!

- Good luck!

Thanks Dave, yes it is a big disappoint as we were hoping to get the garage finished before winter. The roofer joked that he'll book me in for next year, with a small chuckle :( I had a message from Cadent that they'll be in touch within 4 weeks for the survey
The power cable runs along side with the gas pipes, though the contractor said the electrical cable is not a problem.
I can relate to the plans not being where they are supposed to be, there has been a couple of road changes here since 1966 and I think the gas has come in from the original road, but because there were 2 roads around us at the time nobody could say road the lines came in. The gas company assumed it was form the main rd which was added quite a few years later

I did think of calling the gas emergency smell gas line, but we had to be careful as our gas line is already the yellow HDPE pipe and they might have been looking for what caused this smell of gas.........And my contractor wouldn't have been best pleased if they fined him for the damage if they did smell gas. During our application for the garage there was a mention about us needing to identify gas, electricity and water pipes that run underground before we were to start demolition. Which luckily for us we did, but as already said no one knew where it was underground
Just adding, I said the to contractor just to leave the line where it is and make the footing around the pipe. No if ever there is a leak it mean digging up the garage floor and footings

A bit like an unexploded bomb  You could of course agree a new route for the replacement and just bury the existing into your foundations where they will be eventually isolated? saving you the 10 week wait? and for a design suggestion, what about a beer fridge for your early evening refreshment selection :D

When I had our garage built at the old house we did not have the benefit of plans showing pipework runs. As the water connection for the main house was at the bottom of the driveway I assumed it came up the driveway and slightly left to the downstairs loo where the main stopcock was - WRONG!! It went across the front "flower bed" and we went straight through it with the digger bucket digging the trench for the new garage foundations!! However, it meant I could seal it with a T piece and have a riser in the garage for a hose reel - off the unmetered supply rather than the second metered supply we also had (place had previously been a commercial nursery so had a second supply to the greenhouses - and a standpipe near the swimming pool!). Handy when we needed to empty the pool for cleaning (36' x 18' swimming pool, £150 to fill from the metered supply, but could do it from the hose reel from the garage over 2 days!!) or needed to top up the pool during summer.

Good call.........:( Unfortunately we were on holiday in NI when the news came through so we contacted Cadent and of course weren't able to survey the situation ourselves at the time. When we arrived back we paid for the work to be done then and there........Hindsight is a marvelous thing.

Yes thanks had a great time. Belfast up the Causeway Coast through to Derry via the Giants Causeway plus visiting harbours and Castles, eventually driving towards Armagh but detouring off through the hills and some forest.
Spent 4 nights, and 1800 odd miles

The off-putting part of taking a car to Ireland is the cost of the ferry. We went over last year for a nephew's wedding, Holyhead-Dublin on the fast ferry was IIRC £370 return - but luckily I had a lot of Clubcard vouchers where you get 3 for 1 with the ferry company, which helped a lot as I had £100 of vouchers!

Still cheaper than a car to the IOM or IOW...
Only cheap one is Dover Calais as they use the other routes to subsidise that one to compete against the tunnel.

Cost us nothing like £370 to take the car to IoW a couple of years ago! Haven't taken a car (or anything else!) to IoM since 1977!

All relative, IOW is a very short journey... nearly £100 for a car and pax...

Just remembered - when we went to the IoW it was a Groupon deal for the hotel that included the ferry, and as we paid not a lot for 3 nights B&B it was a cheap few days away - except that the first night dinner in the hotel was rubbish, we had problems finding anywhere else to eat the following 2 evenings and even Queen Vic's holiday home was closed!

Up date!!!! Gas engineer will be here on the 10th to install the new internal gas pipes so the meter can be relocated. Gas people here on the 13th to redirect the underground gas pipe and connect up to the new meter position. Building contractor will be back at the end of next week, weather permitting
