I was rudely woken up this morning around 8:30 to discover this

20201008_120520.jpg

Sitting where the new garage will be, but no sign of any driver or workers for that matter
Nearly 4 hours on and........I am I allowed to have a go myself?? Never operated one of these, although my licence says I can :D
Well I guess it does mean things are going to start happening. Heating Engineer here on Saturday to feed new internal gas pipe, Gas people here next week to move the lines and gas meter. :)
Now go away rain!

Garage build up date, gas main pipe re-routed, meter moved, connected and all working. :)
Worker's turned up this morning, keeping very quite, what gave the game away was the distant hum of a digger engine running. Looked out the window at 8:15 to see the contractors busy in the digger :D

They got this far today, back tomorrow morning at 8am to finish the footings.
Monday I'll have to phone the council for an inspection before the concrete will be ordered, so progress at last

Correct - when I had my new garage built at the old house, with proper drawings and full planning permission, no-one turned up to check until when it was just about complete - and the building controls inspector turned up and said I had to install fireproof cladding to the inside of 1 wall as it was less than 2m from our boundary - despite there being no other building within 50+ metres of that boundary other than the front of our house!

No plans stating any fireproof cladding, just spoke to the contractor and as it is double brick backing on to double brick building it isn't a requirement. I will be phoning the council tomorrow and will just confirm with them re the fireproofing.
It's all go here again this morning

You're probably OK as my garage had low brick walls but was timber frame and cladding above and was less than 2m from our boundary wooden fence.

The regs cover what's there and what might be there in the future.

Since building regs inspections are available outside of the local authority their previously hidden human face has come out.

They are becoming very helpful.

That part of the job for my garage (at the old house) resulted in a water supply in the garage! We assumed the unmetered water supply to the house came up the driveway well away from where the garage would be, digging the footings we found it with the digger bucket, went straight through the blue pipe! Could not move the valve at the bottom of the driveway so temp fix with mole grips to stop the flow, emergency trip to local plumbing merchants for fittings, installed a slip fit T piece and valve on the open part of the T, in the end had a hose reel in the garage for car washing on the driveway and for refilling the swimming pool after spring cleaning. Damned sight cheaper than using the other metered water supply to the property!!

Not my problem now as we sold the house in 2006. I told the new owner how to top the pool up / fill the pool after cleaning (not only showed him but also was part of a long printed handover list I left him) but he didn't listen, as months after we sold I got a water bill for the metered supply for about £70, he'd obviously used the standpipe close to the pool which was on the metered supply. Told the water company to send the bill to him as I'd given them the meter reading at sale date (showing zero use).

We emptied and pressure washed the pool every spring (cheaper and easier than trying to keep the water clean chemically and vacuuming over winter), would have cost £150 to refill using the metered supply, cost nothing from the unmetered supply, and would probably have cost us another £100 during the "in use" months topping the pool up, so the saving was considerable over the 24 years we owned the house!!

We had a delay with the gas pipes as you already know, the digger driver was so careful not to damage any other pipes he did well with the help of his worker. The water tap was originally inside the garage, it was a bit of a pain to be honest inside, my plumber moved it outside for me a few weeks back.....free of charge
