Be warned that those concrete blocks are like leaky sponges.

If you are insulating the cavities make sure it doesn't touch the outer skin otherwise moisture will track across and be very damp.

Thanks Frontstep, that is something I didn't know.
Something else I will mention to the builders ;)

Outer finish Brick is fairly waterproof as more dense, dirty wall tie will cause dampness on inside wall quicker than anything. my house was 10 years old before I painted it. Before that in real wet weather I could see the blocks through the plaster but I never had a damp spot inside even with the rockwool insulation touching both walls

BRE Good Building Guide (44, Part 2) which provided the following guidance on cavity wall insulation;

“There can be an increased risk of rain penetration if a cavity is fully filled with insulation, i.e. moisture is able to transfer from the outer to the inner leaves resulting in areas of dampness on internal finishes. Rainwater, under certain driving rain conditions, can penetrate the outer leaf of masonry leading to wetting of the cavity insulation, a reduced thermal performance and damage to internal finishes.”

Your right bricks, good ones that is are much better.
The current trend for block and dirt-attracting renders is storing up trouble.
There are quite a few being redone already.
I live next door to one of what we call "render palaces" done in K Rend its a big lump of already dirty render with the usual grey aluminium windows it's under a year since it was done and despite treatments it looks awful.

I know it but it's quite a few miles south from me but yes certainly that sort of thing.
There are a few "enclaves" of render palaces about these days.
Some of them are even paid for !!

I think K rend is rubbish too, it flakes and discolours. Hard to beat a brick, Dash or plaster finish . Cut stone finish being my favourite.

Famous one was the older type polystyrene beads pumped in for insulation few years back they acted as a moisture bridge.

Their still putting that in but they have now waterproofed the beads.

I think they are a silver colour now, I got it done with the new type beads about 4 years ago on a holiday home and no problems with damp which would show up for sure in a house with the heat off most of winter

I built my house with two skins of insulating blocks, cavity filled with blown fibre insulation and 5mm render - yes, 5mm - in fibre reinforced cement. The same render spec they use for squash courts and prison cells. Very successful, not a single crack in over thirty years.

Further work yesterday while I was off to London on the train.
The cavity issue.......there is no issue as it wasn't planned. However after chatting with the builders I can insulate once the garage is built.
This is how the progress likes today. :)

Footings done and ready for DPC, yes you can insulate inside walls although you will lose some internal square footage. At least you can get rid of all them spare blocks into the filling as it looks like it needs a fair bit

There'll be a good depth of concrete going in on one side as a new 2 poster will be going in :D

Dont overkill with concrete being expensive as it is nowadays 00slk unless builders have it on price, fill is cheaper, 6 to 8" concrete is plenty for a baseless lift with a bit of mesh and if its one of the stronger lifts with the base, 6" on its own would do 30-35 newton concrete
