I have an ML280 auto that has done 185000 kilometres. I do not know if the gearbox oil has ever been changed. One garage I spoke to said that the gearbox oil should be changed every 60,000 kilometres, which makes me think it now needs doing but another one said if it had never been changed, leave well alone and dont do it now. I only have history for the last 5 years and these do not show any change of gearbox oil, so I am now unsure if I should get it changed or not. Can anyone advise

I would have it changed as soon as possible.
Mercedes had a ‘sealed for life’ strategy at one point which caused more issues than not, and they don’t promote that now at all, generally every 37,500 miles depending on the model. The change should also include filters and seals of course.
Welcome by the way....

its best ( from what ive read on here ) to do most auto boxes at 40k miles , some are 60k miles but id defo get it changed if I were you , damn sight cheaper than a new auto box !

No need to duplicate your/my answer then? :D
I was offering my point of view on the OP’s dilemma :D The fact that it was the same as yours will no doubt fill you with joy that you were also right :D:p

Ah but not as wrong as my colleague with the 530e.....:geek::oops::mad::(
That is pretty bad :(

How’s the suspension on yours?

Reason I ask is the adverts say “it floats like a butterfly”. Doesn’t fill a prospective purchaser with confidence that it will stick to the road at all. From that description I’d be expecting to be bouncing around from hedge to hedge with little or no control over my destiny.

“Like a red admiral”
Or, isn’t bouncing from hedge to hedge the normal way to drive then, isn’t it? :p

Welcome to the Forum.....and as you have been well advised in previous comments. get it changed.....all of it!! That means the Box, Torque Converter and the oil cooler. Some dealers offer a transmission oil change, at a very good price, but they then just put the car on the lift, open the drain stud, let it drain whatever comes out, then replace it with the same amount of fresh oil. :mad:This is not a complete oil change, so be care full. Tell whoever you are getting the job done with that you want a complete change, Sump, Torque Converter, oil cooler and a new filter. It's a good idea while you are at it to get the electrical connector to the transmission replaced too. Afterwards, you should be good to go for a long while.
Good Luck, and again,Welcome....:):):)

Seems like the OP is a one hit wonder. Comes on once then disappears.
