Water in gearbox oil is cooler and or seals issue. For sure water in oil not a good thing. Suggest you have that investigated soonest. On code, frankly don't have access to lists for that at moment, someone will be along...

P2221 The signal of component Y3/6b1 (ATF temperature sensor) and (or) Y3/6s1 (Starter lockout contact) is implausible.
Don't know if that is of much help but as ajls600 says you need to get the leak into the transmission sorted immediately to prevent any further damage. Seem to remember something about the combined engine radiator transmission oil cooler being a problem.

Check with make of radiator you have, if Valeo then they were known to leak coolant into the gearbox distroying them essentially (new TC, valves and clutch packs), try getting a sample of fluid from your box and get it over to an Indy for a Glycol test, they only need a couple of hundred ml to get a good test result but will confirm if your going to need to do major work or not

If it's the 722.6 5 speed transmission, then easy enough to get a good sample for testing. If it reads a large water presence, then replace the Valeo rad,and do a complete change and flush..trans, TC, cooling radiator and pipes. You could be lucky and manage to have caught it in time. I wouldn't be in favour of driving it too much as it is. Good luck with it.

Wow, that's nothing in mileage terms...practically brand new. Most likely rubber "O" rings / synthetic seals perished?? Plus the Valeo radiators were known to leak, so you stand a fairly good chance of saving the transmission. Good Luck with it.

Hi Jim2,

the garage has said the damages has already happened so they've suggested it requires a rebuild of a recon with new rad & pipes.

So they tested the ATF fluid and confirmed contamination of the oil then?

That sounds like you're going towards an "ouch!" price... have they given you an estimated cost yet?

When things like this happen, you have to weigh up the cost of repair versus the value of the car - now and after repair i.e.: is it worth spending the repair price? It's extremely painful when your pride and joy hits you like this but you have to get hard-nosed when making decisions now.

btw:
Have you contacted MB Customer Service? Given the age and the extraordinary low mileage I would come straight out and ask for warranty support i.e: a policy settlement or contribution - don't tell them you'd already heard about water in the box but do point out that you've found out that the Valeo radiator was known to leak and cause damage.

btw:
Have you got MB service history to support the low mileage?

If there's no policy warranty forthcoming, somebody here should be able to give you the name of a MB dealer who will discount parts.

I would also think about getting it looked at by an MB indy - again, somebody should be able to point you towards someone in your area who is not only known but hopefully has expertise on auto boxes.

I'm very sorry you have this problem, Chris... fingers crossed for a successful outcome!

Hi davemercedes,

They can get a second hand gearbox for £475 plus vat, this would come with a torque convertor, it would be 8.5 hours "ish" for the gearbox change and the radiator depending on how rusty everything is and how the front bumper comes off but £595 plus vat labour plus £570 inc for the box plus a new radiator which we should be able to source a non Merc one for £160 plus so potentially £1476 inc going second hand I have to say ish as it might go smoothly or not..
Parts are available
Full re build is £1600 plus vat so £1920 inc BUT the radiator still needs to be done which would be £486 on to so £2406 inc FYI

Hi Chris
It's a lorra lolly isn't it? But then if it's all sorted you'll have a nice car in good order. BUT...

Wait around and see if anyone posts any warnings about second-hand auto boxes and actions required etc. to match the box with the car. I vaguely recall a recent posting where a garage installed one and it just would not drive. As I recall, the garage was a responsible company but they were scratching around for help. I'll see if I can find it and send you an update.
