How do I dismantle the housing at the base of the auto gear-lever? The little ribbed dust cover sits on a plastic part which has come loose inside the housing and rattles around when changing gear. I have dismantled everything to access it but can’t see if there is a way to get at the plastic part. I can feel it by putting my finger in the hole at the rear (Oooh err missus! etc.) but can’t relocate it to where it should presumably clip in.

It's on a 1998 E320 W210.

By the way, what’s the secret to removing the gear knob from the lever? Mine seems well stuck on and there is no visible allen screw keeping it in place.

Turn the base of the knob 90 degrees and it loosens its grip. Then pull the knob up and off.
