I have been trying to replace the gearbox bulb in my 1989 190 auto today.Unfortunately the owners manual and Haynes manual don't even mention it so it took me hours to remove all the trim to try and find it. Eventually I did but I seem to have lost something that must fit between the 'E' and 'S' mode switch and the gearbox as I cant see how it fits on.
Any suggestions or experience with this?

I'm not too clear exactly what you mean - about how what fits on? The illumination of the gear indication panel and the e/s switch is by a single bulb (0.5W capless) fitted in a simple push in connector at the forward end and under the indicator panel. Quite easily reached to change the bulb.
The only trim which has to be removed is the panel surrounding the gearshift - one s/t screw at the rear and then unhook from the front end is all that is involved. Although mine is a 124 I'm sure yours is identical in this respect.

Thank for the response. Yes I now know where the bulb is hidden but I didn't when I started so I dismantled the area where I thought it had to be! I am now trying to find out how the E/S slider fits on to the actual switch mechanism beneath the illuminated gear selector. I have given up trying to find whatever it was that must have been dislodged during the dismantling process.
PS. what is an s/t screw?

Hi. This should help. Part number 98 connects to the switch (number 110) under the the selector gate, then the button (part number 101) clicks onto part 98 from the top of the selector gate. I hope that makes sense
