Thanks Graeme

Easy to do mate just take the trans pan off on the bottom of the transmission catch all the oil that comes out so you know how much to put back in an then you just pull the filter out an replace it with a new one

It's an involved job the first time you do it, but you can do it yourself. There are a lot of things to get right.
Sump pan bolts can snap whilst doing this, so you need to make sure you can recover from that where ever your doing it.
Car needs to be totally level. Oil has to be at correct temperature to measure the level.

The cost of this from a decent independent specialist can be as low as around the £200 region. Ive just paid something very close to that for my W212.
Good independents will be able to source the oil and genuine parts very competitively.
For the £80 saving I could make doing it myself, I just left it to the experts (not main dealer).

Yes not only is it possible, but quite a lot of MB owners do it themselves, and there are plenty of "How To" posts here on the forum. . Having said that, you will need at least rudimentary mechanical skills... like everything else, there are tips and tricks on what to do...If you have any doubts about your ability, get a professional to do it for you. Its for sure not as simple as changing the engine oil and filter. Each of the two main MB transmissions, 722.6 and the 722.9 have diffdrent change methods. Check You Tube " MB Automatic Transmission Fluid Change" and you will see plenty of vids on how to do it. Do your research well before youn start.

He probably has the fill from below 7g box , you have the 5g with a dipstick tube (I would guess )

Its worth bearing in mind that you get what you pay for......You can see a lot of transmision oil change kits online, showing filter, gasket and 5 /6 litrs of ATF. This will only be enough for a "quickie" change, transmission only ( approx 4.5-5 Ltrs) meaning that the sump is drained, removed, filter replaced, new gasket fitted, sump replaced and refilled with ATF. This does not include Torque Converter ( 3.5/4 Ltrs), oil radiator and transfer pipes ( 2 ltrs ) and a further 2 ltrs for flushing, which a complete change and flush requires. This is for the 722.6 transmission. I used 12 ltres when I changed my 722.6. I've since changed the car for a slightly newer one, ( 2014 220 CDI, 722.9 trans) and while it still has some time / miles to go before the next ATF change, I've already got the complete change kit..including 20 Ltrs of fluid ( special offer ) £130, so I'll change it in the next few weeks, weather permitting. Changing the 722.9 trans is a slightly different procedure in that you can access and drain the TC via a drain plug, same as the trans sump, but you will still have to flush out the cooler radiator and pipes, and the refill process is different too, as the fluid has to be pumped back up into the trans( the 722.6 can be refilled via the dipstick, so its much simpler )

Lots of vids on youtube.

Sure it is, the right knowledge and a mechanical aptitude being the key as you can generally purchase the tools. But I've seen some right bloopers on YouTube as well,,,,so a bit of care is needed.

How many gears are in it? I'd say its the 722.9 trans, But to be absolutely sure, open the driver side front door, and on the piller, under the lock catch, there is a sticker. Under the DAIMLER AG, you will see a series of letters and Nrs, starting with WDD. This is that particular cars VIN ( Vehicle Identity Number) To deciper this, Google ( where would we be without it?? ) MB VIN Decoder, and select one from the list. Download the decoder, enter your VIN in it, and hey presto...everything you want to know about that particular build MB will be shown, inc engine and transmission type and code. Do that, and then we will know " Above and Beyond a reasonable doubt" what is in your Merc. You will find this data very usefull in future too, if youn ever need part's etc.

The s class and e class with v6 engines saw 7g+ from 2010.

Yes, mine has the stop start so 7g+ I assume. To drain the TC in the stop start trans, you have to remove the auxilary pump from the transmission ( this is an electric pump which keeps the fluid in circulation while the engine is stopped during stop start operation ) Then you have to manually turn the engine until the drain plug on the TC becomes visible, and it can ge drained. The 722.6 does not have a drainplug on the TC, and so must be flushed out via the oil cooler pipes. I think that the 7G trans may have this feature too ( IE TC Drain plug) but I'm not 100% sure about it.

Compared to changing the oil in a manual transmission , yes it is but the autotrans is unbelievably more complex than the manual one, and has a hell of a lot more moving parts and electronics, The VIN decoder will give you a whole lot of usefull info about your car. Ive downloaded it on to my phone, and it comes in very handy when I'm in the garage ordering part etc.
