I have re-set the auto gearbox on the car (this is the same car that the daft mechanic left the coolant cap unscrewed off allowing water to get everywhere).

The symptoms just now are

stalling in reverse
stalling in D when you stop i.e. at traffic lights
very poor acceleration

Smilie and Veeb suggested it might be the MAF sensor. Should I replace the MAf as well. I changed the sparks aboput 2000 miles ago and they were black n sooty. So I'm guessing it is definatley the air/fuel mixture. Should I ut in new sparks when I replace the MAF?

Also I was reading the Hayes manual and that said that if I replace a senso I will need to get the fault code erased on the ECU ortherwise the car might go into 'emergency' mode. Is that true? (as you can see I am trying desperatly hard not to take the car to another mechanic!!)

Thanks for your help.

What year is your car? as the C180 and C200 pre 1996 did not have a MAF sensor , the airflow is measured by an air pressure sensor in the idle control valve/throttle housing.
