Chaps,

Got A140 Avantgarde automatic 2001 registration. It is stuck in 1st gear, got gearbox problem. Garage says something to do with electric motor and needs replacing. Approx £1,500. If this is the case, probably scrap the car, more than than the car is worth. Pity, only done 41k and in great condition

Also, battery keeps getting drained. Having to send for AA to recharge.

Am no mechanic. Could anybody please offer me some advice?

Best, Grahame

I am guessing at the valve body here, if so they can be repaired. Including removing and refitting said unit with a full flush and new oil and filter I would say you are looking at around £400.

Or its an ACS box and the motor that actuates the clutch is dodgy. It could be related to the battery issues if its stuck

The battery repeatedly get's drained; have to recharge constantly. If you think it might be the motor in the ACS box.Do you have any experience of how much this might cost to repair and where I could go to get it fixed?

When you say it's an automatic - do you have the manual gears 1 to 5 but no clutch, or do you have park neutral drive ect?

I'm assuming as you've said it's stuck in first in your first post that it's the ACS system

In that case - have you tried the reset procedure. The system can go crazy if the battery keeps going so you have to get the car to learn the position of the clutch drive plate again. - source http://www.aclassinfo.co.uk/mypage.59b.htm

All of this is done with the engine off

Note .Ensure the car is on level standing wheels chocked as necessary

1. Pull the hand brake lever. ON
1a. Turn the ignition key to position two (2) ON, but Do not start the engine.
2. Press and hold the brake pedal.
3. Engage the first gear.
4. Return to gear lever to neutral.
5. Release the brake pedal.
6. Press and hold the brake.
7. Engage the Reverse gear.
8. Return to gear lever to Neutral.
9. Finally release brake pedal.
10. Release the hand brake lever, Turn off and remove the ignition key.
11. Re-apply hand brake remove chocks

The car is an automatic - Park. Neutral. Reverse. Drive. When I revered to 1st gear, what I meant was that it does not move through the gears to help the car accelerate; it remains in the lowest gear.

Can you please suggest anything?

It could be the tcu, selector unit or a split clutch basket, you need a proper diagnoses.
