Hi

Just drove home my first benz, a 2001 CLK320. The car has covered 70k but all motorway miles has obivously never been thrashed not even a stone chip on the front of it. Everything was going well got about 30 miles and then hit the motor way and opened it up. Very smooth changes then hit 80ish with my foot to the floor and the gearbox popped out of gear and started revving out. The console still read that i was in D but just kept reving round. Pulled in to the slip road put it in to park no noise at all Reverse worked fine so i tried to put it back in to drive and to my surprise it worked so plodded down the motorway no problems at all! This morning tried again and with my foot down same thing happened, just kept reving out until i stopped the car and moved to park and then back to drive drove nicley again. Please help before i have to take to MB dealer!

Hi james and welcome, hard to say with this and could be many reasons.

Is the fluid level OK have you checked it,that would be the first port of call

Many cars suffer from poor connections on the box ECU

I had exactly the same problem with my ML (same gearbox) ...It would lose drive (as if in neutral) just as i put my foot down to accelerate even though the console still indicated 'D'.......when i stopped and restarted everything was ok again. ...It only did this about 3 or 4 times over a period of about one year and changing the fluid/filter when it did it the first time didnt help.
I never found out the reason for this happening as i happened across another gearbox from a burnt out brand new ML which i fitted two years ago and have never had the problem since.

I only replaced the gearbox and not the external ecu, so it seems the problem was definately limited to the gearbox only, if it had been a problem with the ecu i would still have had the same problem.....i always suspected the valve block (electro-hydraulic unit) to be the cause of the loss of drive.

Yes,I have had this on a car where the casing was crumbling and the valve block would get blocked, I always had reverse, just the way it went.

It is simple to take off, and putting the fluis thruogh a sive would show all

With the ECU bit there connectors are bad on many 2000 cars and cleaning the contacts has cured many cars. this is a listed fault

Did you check the atf level using the special MB dipstick after removing the sealed cap from the dip-tube?

Been in to Mercedes and they have plugged in and found 1 code on the gearbox - Gearbox slipping which sounds expensive a mechanic went out with me after resetting the attribute values and cleared the code and worked fine could'nt get it to "slip". The mechanic reckoned that with previous owner had'nt ever taken it to the rev limiter which has made the box lazy and it needed resetting to get used to my driving style and also recommended getting the fluid changed. I am not convinced that resetting the code could have solved the problem and with £3300 for a new box at risk can anyone advise me what to do next?

I did use the right dipstick luckily the previous owner had obviously bought one and had left it in the boot!

Finding the dip stick would indicate that the last guy had some problems, is it ok right now
