Gearbox Problems ML 270 CDI 2003

My transmission is playing up when it gets to the 4th gear it drops back to the 3rd , what might be the problem ? Any help ?

Could be an engine problem, not outputting enough power and gearbox dropping back to 3rd 'cos 4th is too high for the given 'low' engine output.
