gearbox problems

My 2002 E class estate slipped into neutral when accelerating out of a roundabout. (the stick remained in drive so this was not a problem I caused) I had noticed it cluck a couple times before, on roundabouts. It clearly does not like being asked to kick down a couple of gears without stopping first. After bringing the car to a halt I put the stick into neutral, back into drive and all was well. Does anyone know if this is a common minor problem or an expensive gear box renewal and at what cost?

my first thought is gearbox oil. check level and if its not been done recently, change gearbox oil and filter. make sure you use the correct oil too. id do this before even considering looking any deeper (more expensive)

I am quite confident thats your main problem, low ATF. dont try and save pennies, get the genuine fluid from MB, 9.99 litre

You will not have a dip stick to check the level but you can make one from curtain wire where it should be up to 5.6cm on the stick when pushed right in and the engine hot
