My E320 CDI Turbo 2001 W210 WITH 113,000 MILES is stuck in first gear (limp Home Mode)

I have tried to reset it by disc the negative on the battery terminal and depressing the brake pedal for one minute but to no avail. It is still stuck in first gear.

I took it to an indie and after it going on the computer they said it was either of two things showing up a) the diff ratio in the gearbox & b) the gearbox ecu.

They didn't mention the gearbox module selector but I am just wondering if the module selector controlls the diff ratio??? and whether I should change that as I think that the module selector is a common problem.

Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.

Obviously it can't be the diff ratio, unless the elves have been at it overnight & rebuilt it! Could be the ECU, check for oil in the loom as well.

Hi type49,

I can't seem to locate the gearbox ecu.

I thought it would be to the side of the centre consul once removed. I have removed the central consul and there does seem to be signs of some sort of sticky spillage (probably the little one's drink) but I can't seem to locate the ecu. I was later told it is in the engine bay next to the main ecu but this doesn't seem right.

There is a small black box immediatly underneath and connected to the gear selector lever which has a black pipe going to it, could it be that?

Be carefull here, the gearbox control unit is under the bonnet but the gearlever unit is also a control unit called selector unit. In front of this behind the ashtray area is another unit, this is the airbag ecu - DO NOT UNPLUG IT, or accidently knock it. Pouring drink into the selector ecu is not helping matters.

Pouring drink in tells me it is the selector module on the gear shift, I did not see that bit before. the last one was successful in washing it out
