start car cold, drives as it should until it gets to 25-30 mins, then it sticks in whatever gear its in.
the +/- on the gear shift does nothing ,pull over, select park then it wont go back to any other gear even though gear lever moves.
Turn off ingnition, restart and all fine again ?
Searched through forum for similar problems and thought "speed sensor" on gearbox.
A trip to local m/b dealer later and found out there is no simple screw in sensor :( so time to ask advice on here.

probably those speed sensors, they are part of a circuit plate including inhibitor switch/temp sensor and solenoid wiring, costs about £150 or more, probably £400 to do the full job.

but you must have a star diagnosis before spending money on a suspected problem!!!

It is probably the speed sensor, mounted on the electroplate in the box.

About £130 parts + oil + 1.5 - 2hr labour.

Where in Hants are you?

Surely this could be the box ECU for the selector just as it could be the plate.

Lynall- there are no noises when it plays up. The s/w switch wont work either when the gear decides to stick !

On cars up to 1999-2001 MB put this down to poor contacts on the box ECU particularly on the 2 end CAN pins

would be nice if it were something as simple as that but its a 2002, dont know if that removes it from the possibility of dodgy connection?

2002 built? or 2002 registration though? i think the dates Malcolm quotes are build dates, rather than registration dates, so may still apply to your car

Thanks everyone for your replies. Will have a look underneath and see what wiring is like before i go for a diagnostic check.
