I am new here. But, after reading about a snub by a salesperson, just because a guy wasn't "dressed for the occasion," I just HAD to tell my story. I have an older 2002 E320, and am not thinking about upgrading, but some time ago I sold some property. For nefarious good reasons, I promised my adult son that I would buy him a newer s-class after the property sold.

We went to a dealership dressed in "unremarkable" casual clothing. We were very interested in a 3-year old S....but, after several attempts at summoning a salesman, one finally sauntered over, and after we had asked a few pertinent questions, he sarcastically stated that we might be better served across the road....where there was a car lot of "very used" autos.

We returned to the snooty place 3 days later with our newly purchased 2-year old S, noted that the car we were interested in was still there....and summoned the "unsalesman"....with our vehicle strategically parked in his view at the window....then asked him if he worked on commission (which we already knew was the case) and pointed to our purchase....he rolled his eyes, cursed profusely, and walked away!

Good for you and welcome with your very nice car.

We have heard of these things before and it happened to me in Sweden, I had overalls but what the salesman did not know was that the vintage RR parked outside was mine, until I started to drive off. I did not get served, and I wanted a 1 year old 300TE back then

Excellent..!!!!! :p:p:p

A similar experience in a car showroom in Spain last year. At the time, we were looking for a suitable 4x4 for my wife. We went into a shiny new showroom and started looking at a very nice sparkly new Kia Sportage (wife's choice - NOT mine..!). After 15 minutes or so of non-sales 'activity', as the 2 salesmen were FAR too interested in sitting, chatting to each other rather than make a SALE, we walked out. As they saw us get into my ML, one of them came running out. Too late - my wife bought a Land Rover Freelander...!!!!

I will have to remember that one :grin::grin: I shall ask to see the salesman/woman/person/being.... who has a shinier Rolex than mine :grin::grin:
Goodness, they think because they wear a £75, ill fitting suit, they are something special don't they? I loved the initial story and wish I could have seen the face

guys we are not all like that

when i first started selling motors i was approached by a guy with tatoos all the way up both arms enquiring about a four year E240 with all the toys, my sales manager walked straight past this guy and ignored him, i apprached the guy and talked to him regarding the E class, then he said he would be interested and would return later to take it for a spin, i said no problems and took his details and he wondered off, hopped into his 1995 wrecked fiat punto. My sales manager came up to me and gave me a earful about wasting my time and his money dealing with axxxxles.

He did return later that day in a S320, turned out he was a partner in a chaufer business, bought the car and many more from me over time.

My first lesson that i have always held on too, is never judge a book by its cover, its rude and above all bad business, i love to see guys come in with muddy boots, sweat suit or even baseball caps cause these guys get such a bad reception elsewhere if you are civil to them they will always deal with you.

as you say, never judge a book.
An uncle rang a dealer a few years ago about a 6 month old S420 and made an appointment to go and see it. He duly turned up but the salesman was busy so he had a wander around the showroom with his 13 year old son. The son, a smart, respectful lad, was sitting in a car as they do and a salesman walked up to him, unceremoniously slung him out, and locked the car to ensure he didn't get back in. My uncle saw this, said nothing and promptly left.
He got a call 1/2 an hour later asking if he was delayed. He explained, allowed the salesman to grovel and then refused to do business with them anyway.
Why some car salesmen are so arrogant I've never understood. If they'd just knelt down and had a chat with the kid, they'd have realised that he hadn't just wandered in off the street, was actually a merc nut along for the ride with his father and would have probably sold a £55,000 car.

It`s an ill wind that blows no good. Perhaps one spin off from the current attack of financial insanity will be that these gits will be the first casualties.

My uncle had a very similar experience with MB a couple of years ago. He has his own Light Commercials and Body Repairs workshop in Bham specialising in Mercedes, he is a Merc fan like all of my family!!!

He went in to the dealership with his overals after closing up midday on Saturday, he wanted the new E320 CDI Sport, they basically looked at him and paid no interest when he was enquiring about the car. My uncle got annoyed and left.

He went to another dealer in the West Mids and bought the car fully loaded and paid cash. Nearly £50K worth of car with the extras he had :)

He went back to the first dealer to rub it in, no surprises that the salesman's jaw dropped.

Michael Caine went to Rolls Royce in London when he first started earning big cash, he was wearing a polo neck jumper and jeans, the Rolls dealer asked him nicely to leave the showroom so he did.
Caine went next door to the Bentley dealer and bought the Corniche equivalent Bentley, he drove out of the Bentley showroom, stopped out side the RR showroom and peeped his horn until the saleman that asked him to leave turned and looked, Caine then gave the chap the V sign and drove off.

Think we've all had experiences like that.

I had several salesmen dismiss my interest when I was looking to spend approx 20k on a 1 year old C-class. I was 31 at the time, but looked young for my age. I was just dressed in jeans and a T-shirt. Think they all thought I was an annoying, time wasting kid just putting fingerprints on their cars!!

I had a similar experience a couple of years ago when I was wanting to sell my house along with a flat that I had been renting out.

I spent one morning going along the highstreet talking to estate agents about selling my properties.

On several occassions the agent assumed I was a young first time buyer as soon as I walked in, until I said I was wanting to know their agent fees to sell two properties for me!

Think that is my pet hate - one minute salesmen think you are a timewaster, the next they trip over themselves to look after you.

Now ! Don`t get me started on Estate Agents. There next in line for the firing squad.
