There are many people looking to escape our long surgery waits.

The Private Sector is on fire and coining it in.

It is galling that you can get the same surgeon in days/weeks privately and it's months if not years on the NHS.

And if it all goes bad you get shuffled off to the NHS.

I know of no other employer that has such an arrangement with its part-timers.

Call me weird (most do) but I still really enjoy "fettling" the cars, I'll be 60 next year also and have the luxury of choosing the jobs I take on but most regular maintenance things are still within my capabilities. Thus far I've got off fairly lightly with just few minor health issues although I have to say having Covid last January was pretty dreadful and took me several months to get over properly. I find regular stretching massively helpful in keeping away aches and pains, I really notice the difference if I haven't bothered for a week or two.
I always tell my kids you must push yourself, inactivity is seductive but deadly.

Yep, i paid to see a private consultant as no GP wanted to see or examine me? He said it will be 5 to 6 months as a urgent NHS patient or 6 weeks if i paid 13k!!! Ive not that kind of money !
So my Polish wife Babs made all arrangements and appointments for me as her ex daughter in law works in Medical and all done with no bother....and guess what? Price will be about 3k!! Just goes to show what a price mark up in England we pay! Knee joint will prob come from same manufactor supplying private sector in UK too? Il tell you its rip off Britain all right!!

An old B-Class.
I agree about exercise being so important, our dog is 9 so hopefully will be around for a few years yet. We take her to the park twice a day, it's only a mile each time but it all adds up. I also hula hoop for 20mins every day so I know I get an hour of exercise. I don't work on cars, to be honest I don't even think I would know where the fuel goes and if I did I'd probably fill up with petrol instead of diesel, so it's probably best I don't even try!

My mum is 98 and can still touch her toes :D
Wife & I are both in our late 60s - she walks at least 5 miles a day with our pooch & friends and recently demanded a Fitbit to keep track. I walk as little as possible - I try to do about 10 miles a week but I find walking incredibly boring. I’d rather be trying to 3d print a plane, learn CAD or electronics or how to program a micro controller or my new RC transmitter.

I could see the difference in my in-laws, who both died at 95.

She was a great bridge player (winning comps in her 90s against much younger players) , loved doing puzzles, reading etc and was mentally with it to the day she died. My FiL was always very active but his mind went.

We need mental activity as much as physical activity.

PAUL GARRETT.
Hang in there.
I had a TKR in 2013 on right knee, that was after years of other surgery on it, ligament reconstruction, knee cap removal, the list goes on. after the op, i was up and walking the next day, lots of pain but work through it. It was the best thing ever for me, totally pain free after 6 weeks, full bend, can also kneel on it which i was supposed not to be able to do.
8 years on, it clunks and clicks, my job involves a lot of walking and driving. I suspect i will need a revision at some point, but its good. Left knee !, hurts like hell, but going to stick with what i was born with for a while longer. Its taken me longer to get over the hand op.

Thanks for info, as a bus driver you use your knee as the force to use the brakes and having this op will mean all be ok after recovery, had ripped ligament on right knee back in 2004 and that was bad enough but this is on another level!
I can put up with left knee until i can get that one sorted, but for now i need to get back to work and see all my wonderful passengers who are obviously missing me like crazy!!!???.....( tonque firmly in cheek!! Ha!)

It is much more expensive to operate in all senses of the word in the UK.

There is the thorny issue of postoperative complications to consider.

Health Insurance that covers repatriation is important.

Where do you want to be.
