I have a 1980 450slc and the fan motor was squeeeeeeeling like a stuck pig, so I opened up the cover and give it a squirt of WD40.
Anyways.

Now I am happily driving along (guzzling ocean liners worth of fuel on every trip to the shops) when the fan just switches itself on!
- the switch in the car seems fine and normally will turn it on through all four settings normally - however, the fan just kicks in at full blast every now and again, regardless of setting...
do I need ghostbusters?

Ta.

I'll tell you what....

I must be the first to have this problem - as this forum is usually the most forthcoming I have ever encountered - so in the interests of fairness, once I fix this bugger, I will let y'all know what it was!

If it was an E ....

Gavin,
I dont know about the 450. Mine (2000 E class admittedly) has a fan regulator. On mine, the regulator started squealing exactly like a stuck bearing and after a while the fan speed would vary eratically from off to full without touching the switch. The reg has a live and neutral feed together with a feed from the switch to tell it how fast to run the fan (roughly 0-8v when I checked it). If yours has one, and its duff, you will get the squeal and its quite capable of switching on the fan on its own.
