Hi new to the forum so apologies if posting in the wrong place, got my GLA in October 2017 noticed yesterday when washing that various panels on the car have small pin head sized rusty coloured spots on, even got them underneath the protective film on the rear doors. Anyone have any suggestions?

Take the car back to the supplying dealer immediately. Tell them that you know about the Fire Opal Red paint issue, that this looks identical and you want it sorting under warranty, or the car replacing FOC as you’ve been supplied a vehicle not fit for purpose.

Thanks for the reply currently waiting on the dealer sorting out what they are proposing as they state they don’t have a paint specialist? I did wonder if it was a similar issue as the fire opal red that I have read about,

It looks like it. Definite pinholing not orange peel effect that I can see.

If they don’t have a paint specialist then you’re very happy them replacing the car FOC to you :)

Without sounding too dim can you advise what FOC stands for?

Is this the new Fire Opal Red then , as you say Craig....scary
I think saying they don’t have a paint specialist resonates ....

Tiny pin head rust spots can be from scintered brake pads .... there are some on my car behind the front wheel arches.

I’ve seen similar on cars around South Queensferry - fall out from the blasting on the Forth Rail Bridge

Hi I thought it might be some sort of environmental fallout however it’s underne the protective film that’s on the rear doors too so would rule that out I think

It is nothing like the fire opal red issue from what I can see , you have metal contamination from some heat source where metal has been heated , the brake pads if allowed to get down to the metal will do this..sparks flying... Another more likely source is where metal has been cut or grinding has taken place,. The sparks are red hot and will sink into the paint finish, these then rust and show up on lighter colours... A paint expert will be able to tell you the reason for your contamination....
The metal cutting and grinding will also melt itself into the glass as well and can destroy the glass.

A bit odd that its under the paint protection film though, unless that film is applied at the dealers?

Smart + others :)
Is or was the car parked near a railway line? The metal particles from high speed trains can land on the car and will show more on white because of rust. Is the paint rough on top surfaces?

Hi the car has never been parked near a railway line, the small spots of rust feel raised when you run a finger nail over however won’t remove or polish, some of the spots are more orange and are just like smooth to the surface

As far as I am aware the film is applied at manufacturing

Yes, had this on a new Hormann double garage sectional electric door, I assume the swarf from a cutting or grinding process in the factory wasn’t cleaned off properly before painting and as the door was white rust spots were clearly visible and appeared within 6 months. Horman replaced the whole door without charge. Incidentally I was told by the UK supplier that Hormann had just moved to a new factory.

I was very impressed the doors were changed without fuss all credit to them

you’ve been supplied a vehicle not fit for purpose.

Be careful there - it still functions as a car so it is fit for purpose.

It might not be of satisfactory quality though.

However as others have suggested this looks like post-production contamination. Might be worth having a look at other cars at the supplying dealership to see if they show similar signs.
