Can anyone advise why my GLE 2019 auto petrol when revering intermittently slams into park so harsh it feels like I have been hit from the rear. The garage say they can't find anything. It's done less than 14k miles and done it since new. Thanks Lee

Just a wild guess but I am assuming on your car the gearbox will go to 'park' if a door is opened whilst moving - this may be a fault with door sensors?

Has it got some sort of reverse collison detect? Not sure on Mercedes, but latest VWs etc have it and I've seen comments that it's very late to operate and very abrupt.

that's a great shout !!!

I have never heard a car go in park whilst moving without driver intervention. never thought of a door catch might cause (but seems possible, so not as silly as it first seems). But otherwise the only way would be a wiring fault as the wheel or vehicle moves that's sending the wrong signal round the can.

If you have collision assist turn it off and see if the fault goes away.... if it definitely doesn't have it then you want some new parts and a new gearbox fitted. P stopping a car is NOT something any car should ever do at any time of its life. Its ONLY there to help a stationary car stay still where the owner is too dim to use the park Brake (which is a mandatory thing in Europe if parked on public roads....)

My 2014 CSL does exactly this. I discovered whilst 'fine tuning' my position against parking lines.
Reversing slowly, opened door to check position and Wham! I'm parked!!
I was a bit non-plussed by this so tried again. Same result!

I'm not sure I could keep to within forum rules if I was to reply to your ridiculous statement .... :coffee:

It's a wonder it hasn't wrecked the gearbox or at least not snapped the park pawl off inside.

you surprise me, the parking pawl on an Automatic is a tiny joke that just about manages to hold it still in a light wind… they can be a total nightmare to replace often requiring the gearbox's removal to get at

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/the-highway-code/waiting-and-parking-238-to-252

Rule 239 - you MUST apply the handbrake before leaving the vehicle

I've never, routinely, applied the hand/parking/emergency brake on any of the autos I've owned .... and AFAIK, most of this forum is the same. Never had a pawl break.

Interesting quoting 'handbrake' from highway code.
As most MB don't actually have one?

Mine has a 'footbrake'......

So establishing the fact that the highway code could not be followed to the letter then a 'reasonable' interpretation or understanding of the intent would be....

A means of physically preventing unattended movement in any direction, as available to the vehicle, should be utilised. In other words a 'parking brake'

So using a Park function on an auto box would work well, as would footbrake, handbrake etc

Slams into Park?

Does the gear selector move, or do you mean the brake is applied?

Assuming the same as my ML, the gear selector uses electrickery to select gears and is merely a switch. My ML will also select Park if you open the door but the only thing that moves is the tell tale on the dash.

My W213 was the same with the lever “on the tree”

I don't use the park brake/hand brake which mine is the latter as it's electronic but applied by hand if I'm on a level surface. But any sort of a gradient I put the "brake" on first then select park or remove the key as that also selects park. By doing it this way the car is being held by the brakes rather than the gearbox alleviating any strain on the pawl.

I'm the same as you. Somewhere up thread the comment was made about the horrible thud if you engage drive after the car has been resting on the gearbox pawl ... not very mechanically sympathetic

Mine has a 'footbrake'...…

I didn't write the highway code....

the roads would flow better and be far safer if I had, but the "use of the PARK brake" would still apply

depending upon design the pawl may not engage - thus the vehicle might start to move and gain enough momentum to break the pawl and roll out of control...

its just like a manual, use both when any form of incline is involved.....
I can imagine the ISM will likely fail early as well as incurring gearbox damage when relying on that to hold the vehicle on a hill....

Not only did we often have to take boxes out to fix broken and damaged pawls.... we often had to recover cars that couldn't get out of park because the owner was a lazy idiot - and the OTHER key reason to use the park brake is to ensure its all happy and working correctly so you can pass its annual MOT.... another frequent fail item on many auto's driven by idiots

Never had a MOT fail on hand/park brake despite its infrequent use!
