Last November I bought a '97 230 CLK Kompressor and I have to say it's been a great car. Fast enough for me (mainly urban/city driving) and reliable, cheap and generally impressive however... it's just not me. Maybe a little too flash, maybe I'm fighting a mid life crisis or maybe I just miss my old '93 W124.

I did advertise the W124 but over the Xmas ther's few buyers and I didn't exactly push it so it's still outside the house looking lovely... several of my mates had asked to be given the option of buying the CLK when the time came and fair enough one is going to take it for what I paid for it... I'm happy with that, drove a CLK "free" for 4 months (he's away and won't be able to take it until end of March) and got that out of my system!

I'm moving house later this year and we won't need 2 cars then so it'll be just one, an estate (we have 2 big dogs!) and I'll be looking for a V6 240 E Estate around then...

for now I'm looking forward to getting back into my slow and slightly cumbersome 2.0 petrol manual old W124 with it's high seats and stately presence......

Well thanks for all your views and observations... (we really need a big BIG rolleyes smilie)..

Just today I bought a '00 E240 2.6 V6 Aventgarde and it looks and drives like new. I found with the CLK I just hadn't enough room and I'm getting too old and bulky and to be climbing out of coupés!

If any of you have horror stories about the 2.6 V6 now is the time to share......

Well the fuel economy is worse than the E320 and rust is a serious issue, however mine (touch wood) is remarkably free of the stuff. Electrics were never a stong point either and the diff breather tends to block. However I love mine:)

I won't know about fuel until I get out there and drive the thing for a few weeks but I checked for rust and it seems fine.... Electrics are unpredictable ba$t@€ds so all I can do is cross my fingers, sacrifice a virgin and hope. Is the breather easy to clear or is it a garage job?

It's a replacement, drop the diff, replace the propshaft and drivehsaft's oil seals at the same time. To tell if the breatehr is blocked just look at the diff, oil leaking out is the give-away.

Fuel isn't any better than the 320 but not really any worse either. I once saw 37 on a run though low 20s round town admittedly. The smaller V6's are very sweet. Can't say that I had many electrical problems aside from the dash cluster which is now repairable anyway (had it been a year ago I may have still had my 240). Never had a problem with the breather either. Just the usual MAS and a couple of sets of plug leads.

That's an issue with this one too - temp and clock displays are a bit mad Ted. But the garage I'm buying from will fix all these little niggles before I pick it up (hopefully Friday!).

Ok... that E240 turned ouit to be a piece of crap.... clock had 72k - it was closer to 172k!

but... I just bought an S Class 280, '00 and I'm in love! Sure it's a tad underpowered but what's the hurry in such a machine?
