I have been the proud owner for a week now of a B plate '85 230CE Coupe (139k), and I am highly chuffed with my entry into the world of MB ownership!
I live in the High Peak area, approx a dozen miles east of Manchester, and would appreciate advice from fellow locals as to which you reckon are good and reasonable Independent Merc garages for servicing, as mine needs one-badly!
I have been quoted £230 for a 200 point service which seems mighty expensive to me considering it's an old tech 4 pot engine??
Any leads/names and numbers gratefully received!

Probably the closest to you would be Dronsfields (east of Oldham). They are a mercedes breakers, but also do servicing work.

Their web page is www.dronsfields.co.uk. Their way of doing business can take a bit of getting used to, but I've had some work done there and have been happy enough with the quality of what they do.

Thanks David, I've seen Dronsfields mentioned before somewhere, but the reference to the way they do business taking a bit of getting used sounds intruiging to say the least! I've come across Hayes in Ardwick near central Manchester who quote £100 for a 'full service' which sounds OK.
Anybody used them before?

MB garage

Hi Pashtum

I used to be a MB mechanic but moved on 7 years ago.

I worked at Hayes of Manchester for 4 years. They are a decent garage and the foreman is a very knowledgable guy who is a former AMG technician.

If you decide to use them, tell John the receptionist that James recommended them to you and I said he would give you good discount.

Hi Spanners,
Thanks for your info, much appreciated! When I called Hayes to check out prices I spoke to a lady called on Liz on reception and I said I'd been recommended by a guy from this site (your good self in a previous posting you'd left) and she seemed pleased! I've now actually booked my '85 230CE into Dronsfields near Oldham for a service since it's nearer to me and they have also been recommended on the site- they charge £38 per hour currently....I'll see how they get on, and post the results asap.
