ok when i bought my merc (1992 300ce 24v 3.4L amg) i knew it needed a new fuel pump (was told it runs badly and stalls with less than quarter of a tank of fuel) any one got some good shop suggestions for buying these? , ive been told its easy to fit them (under rear passenger seat/underneath car) just need to find best prices , funnily enough usa seems to offer good prices due to good exchange rate atm. mine shares the same fuel pump as the standard 3.2 afaik.

Normally with the existing pump if you run it backwards with the pump section full of diesel or submerged this will clear out all of the rubish and rust

Most guys in the states do this with their 126 cars, once the rubish comes out that has built up over the years, they run with ease

Many of the six cylinder 124 cars have two fuel pumps connected in series : one is close to the tank , just by the diff and the other above the plastic shield , together with the filter and accumulator .

As Malcolm says , runnning them backwards is worth a try before you go to the expense of replacement .

The other thing to check is just the soundness of the electrical connections , particularly to the more exposed one by the tank , on one of my cars this pump had stopped working due to the terminal corroding right through . The car will still run on one pump but with the symptoms you describe , also suffering from fuel starvation under hard acceleration .

I got a pair of good secondhand pumps from Boss Parts in Leeds ( www.mercedesparts.co.uk ) who is a specialist Mercedes breaker . There is also Mercman in Southampton - both do mail order .

Alternatively , Eurocarparts have these pumps as well .

thanx for that advice , very much appreciated , what you describe pontoneer sounds very likely as im not hearing any noises that suggest ones worn out like you normally get , and i can see how there exposed to the elements :) , i shall investigate that first and clean the pumps + change filter while im at it :)

p.s might explain why the car feels a bit sluggish too , should be seriously quick , says on amg sticker attached to engine that it has 205kw @6500rpm which is basically 275bhp or thereabouts :).

If you don't see any obvious problems with the pumps , try the filter first . If the filter hasn't been changed in a while it could be choked , restricting the flow of fuel to the engine . I did this job on my 190E and it made a noticeable difference to the power delivery .

Single pumps are larger than the double type.

aye i found that so i used the same site you did to reference with the ones he said it fitted to on ebay and the numbers match with mine , so in theory it should fit (crosses fingers!)

hence ive ordered 2 of them :) will see when they arrive , good price too imo for bosch parts.

ok just for reference , they replaced all 72 pump codes with just 7 , seems the ones i bought actually have a higher pressure rating/power than the originals which isnt a bad thing given its controlled anyways.

http://www.sandtler.de/katalogangebote/artikeluebersicht/fuel_safe/benzinpumpen_bosch/bosch.htm

my new ones are 0 580 254 910 the old ones on car are now 0 580 254 911

if you compare the two theres not alot in it but as my car probably runs these pumps on the limit due to tuning by amg that little extra wont do any harm :)

ok pre warning even though the pumps i bought work fine , there actually slightly fatter than the originals , same length and fitment but some minor tweaks the cage that holds them need to be done . i ended up removing the plastic spacer between the 2 old ones and using an extended bolt + a few bends in the right place to adapt the cage . tested and it works fine , the pumps seem louder possibly as there more powerful and theres more return noise who knows but other than that everything went ok apart from a face full of fuel when removing tank pipe and blocking it temporarly lol.

p.s the regulator keeps the pressure correct so it wont effect the car with more pressure although it will help under extreme load etc as the pumps can deliver quicker , to have any noticable effects id have to get an adjustable regulator and a remap of ecu + possibly injectors , but that aint gonna happen lol im not insane :) happy if it smooths out the engine a bit etc tbh which it seems to have.
