Well, after a year of MB ownership, I've decided to chop my C270 in for a BMW coupe.

No doubt after a year or two I'll be looking to change again and I may even come back for a CLK!

Anyway, thanks for all the advice you have offered when I've asked for it and good luck all.

Can I ask why?

Much as I like the 270, I wanted something a bit quicker / sportier and a bit newer.

I could have bought a clk500 but when it came down to spending money, the thought of possible repair bills, fuel and insurance costs and this Govt's continued onslaught against anything with an engine capacity over 1.5 litres made me look elsewhere.

The only thing that could have fitted the bill would have been a CLK320 cdi but unfortunately nothing appeared in my price bracket.

As much as I'd have preferred an MB star on my bonnet, MB seem to offer one of two types of cars. Affordable but 'safe' / 'luke warm' or wild and sporty but needing the owner to be an heir(ess) to a fortune. I didn't want the former and I couldn't afford the latter.

So a 55 plate 330Cd M Sport Coupe with 3 years free servicing was a very appealing thing, particularly when the dealer made me a very good offer re p/ex and credit interest rate.

This time around MBUK dealers couldn't find me anything and wasn't prepared to go the distance to make the deal. Next time, when they want me back in the MB fold, they may.

So there's no issue about MB per se, neither the marque or the dealerships (MB of Kettering who supplied / maintained the car were superb) are a problem. It's just this time, they couldn't get me what I wanted, when I wanted it.

As I said in my first post, however, I would consider one again and will certainly test drive a new C Class when I do decide to change.

OK. You've certainly given it some thought and I would find it hard to argue with the case put. Funnily enough, like you I also think MB have got it dead right with the new C class. I love it and when it comes time to "down-size" I'll have one. I might even have a diesel!
