Its an ill concieved idea that will be open to fraud by folk buying old bangers now, and then keeping them for 12 months and then getting a £2k hand out. Traders etc will do this no doubt.

It is deeply flawed as it will mean that people will take the govt up on this deal, but still be short of funds to buy their euro/eco/snot box of choice. So people will take loans/HP/PCP loans to buy the new box and they will be further in debt.

There will always be a classic/older car fanbase but the large majority of folk drive older cars because thats what they can afford, and doing this may make people over reach themselves financially, and isn't that what put us in this credit crunch in the 1st place. I am cynical that this government wants to outlaw older cars and this is its 1st step in that process. It wants us all terrified of speed cameras in little euro socialist boxes.

And I cannot see the public benefit in people driving newer cars when older ones are still servicable. Okay building newer cars creates jobs, but not that many, older ones still need serviced, repaired, parts made so plenty of jobs could go if the UKs motor fleet is made more youthful.

Agreed

From a UK economic view I think that it is ill advised

1). It will mainly suck imported vehicles into the UK

2). It will reduce the price of nearly new vehicles that have been bought over the past 18 months.....many new private buyers could just simply go for these

3). A significant proportion of new cars in the UK are sold to the corporate market - "fleet" buyers, hire company, Limited companies and the like................the private buyer does not buy as many new vehicles as the corporate buyer................the corporate buyer has stopped buying.....he will have to start again soon..........maybe incentives would be better offered to the corporate buyer in terms of target tax and capital allowances. The corporate buyer will not buy in "old" cars to get the incentive.

In my view it will have little effect on the market - car sales may increase over the next few months and the government, if they introduce the scheme, could take credit for this increase to gain political advantage, but it will not be true. It will also be seen by "joe public" as a nice gift from the Government of the day

4). In France, Germany etc., etc. there are far more private buyers than corporate buyers - it may therefore be appropriate in those countries who also have a strong domestic motor vehicle manufacturers which definitely need support.

Good one Gordon, you will be helping to support the German, French, Spanish, Japanese and Italian car manufacturers.

The money should be spent in a different way

Any scheme introduced by this Government will be open to abuse as they will fail miserably to administer it efficiently.
What purpose will it serve "scrapping" all these old vehicles - most are being scrapped anyway, or will be over the next few years or so as the economy picks up because of the clever measures introduced by Gordon and Alistair, (so they tell us anyway)

I agree 100% its a flawed quick fix idea that is open to abuse and actually typical of the sort of "solutions" that this Government come up with.

It won't make me buy a horrible pokey little Eurobox anyway!

All the best,

Thats because the people that make up the government are truly dim people with pseudo socialist ideas that must be stopped.

Good, I drove a fiat panda on holiday once and I thought it was the work of the devil. It may have been new, but it was an appalling heap of junk nonetheless.

If you can explain how a trader would make money by buying old cars, keeping them for 12 months, then scrapping them and buying new cars (which would then be secondhand) then please let us all know!

I think that one result of this scheme will be that older owners of older cars will scrap their long-term old bangers and buy horrible new hatchbacks for their sprogs to learn to drive in. So lots of W124s, Volvo estates, older Peugeots, SAABs, BMWs and the like will be scrapped, leaving dross like 8 year-old Escorts, Fiats, Lancias & the like still on the road

Okay building newer cars creates jobs, but not that many,

really.......so the hundreds of business that supply the car industry doesn't count??? when rover closed down there were thousands from the supply chain that lost there jobs also.

anyway rant over.....and yes its a stupid idea, why not cut VAT on new cars for 12 months?

The scheme will be a fix ............ do you really imagine a labour (give the less privilaged tax credits to buy votes) government would hand over £2K of our hard earned without a stink going up.

The car industry will make it self financing ............

Swap discounts, and employee schemes for tax credits ...........

Just the mention of it, will be holding up car sales ............... they need to sort it quickly, either do it.....or say they wont .................. if folk think theres a drink in it for em........they'll wait to purchase, causing more misery.

So did I , but then again my ex wife was sitting next to me as well and your judgement would apply to both in my case .(at least I could give the car back after 14 days with no penalties and a refund of my deposit )

that's the missing link QS. the government could give us two grand for a used wife then we could buy a new car with the cash saved on shoes & bags but if you don't pay you get repossession of the wife :( thus making repossession a thing of the past & stimulate the ecconomy

Simple, buy the older cars in now for about £1k/car. Keep them for a year, tell the govt you'd scrap them and buy nearly new eco/snot/euro boxes down at the dealers and then re-sell them on your fourcourt for what you paid for -£1k and pocket the £1k difference. Do this 30 times and you got £30k.

A travesty nick, but this is part of the EU ploy to put us into french boxes. its good for france, and good for socialism to have people in ghastly cars rather than interesting older ones.

Had the misfortune to have the hire car company mess up this week. Usually get C Class or BMW 1 series when in France. Got a surprise upgrade (SIC) of a new 2009 Renault Scenic.

AAARRRGGGHHH - stretch for the gear lever, horrid key fob (what are the 3 buttons for?) and Sat Nav miles worse that the BMW let alone the excellent MB version.

If this is what the EU/GB/AD want us to part ex our £2k older cars for then they are misguided. Also would any working class person really be able to get HP/credit in the current climate?

Can't say I understand any of this one.

The rules are you have to have owned the card for 12 months (i.e. name on the old V5 has to match the new V5), the scheme ends next May (assuming the 300,000 iterations aren't used up first) AND the DVLA are monitoring the scrapping of the old car via its VIN. The scheme is not open to nearly new cars either.

Oh and the old car has to have valid MOT (actually has to be within 14 days of last one expiring) EVEN if its SORN...no real bangers allowed!

The bottom line is that its only open to people who own 10 + year old cars who can buy a new one. There are 2 sorts of people who drive 10 year old cars. Those who have classics - who won't swap for anyone, least of all £2000, and those who have no money and thats the best that they can afford. They aren't running a banger for the fun of it, they simply couldn't afford a better car, and given that they need to own it for 12 months, that must have been in the good days! So the gov is suggesting that someone who unwillingly runs a car worth £500 can afford to buy a euro box worth £10,000 just because its £8000. Then they can get the finance (We'll assume they aren't A+ risk profile) in the middle of a credit crunch. I would imagine that if those people could afford such payments they'd have leased a new corsa some time ago! Fact is that they'd be stretching and taking a massive risk to raise £3000 (I know, I used to be one of them) In this climate they aren't going to be too eager to take a risk and even if they did, they'd still be £5000 short.
Whoever put this plan together is numerically illiterate - oh, of course, it was our prime minister - the moron who got us into this mess in the first place.
