Just had some 'words' from Plod today. On a strange road in a strange town (Kinross) I missed the 'flashing 20s' near a school and got stopped for 30. They accepted that I was a stranger to the area, and gave me 'words of advice' without reporting me.

I accept that there was no excuse but it should be a warning to us all to watch the 20s. Incidentally, I suspect if I had been above 30, they would have booked me.

What annoys me about these flashing 20's, is there's never a sign to show it's back to 30 again.
As you pass the sign on the other side of the road it should be back to 30, but there's nothing facing the cars as they leave the 20 section.

You got off SCOT free. (Get it?)

That must have been a friendly copper. I’ve never really been pulled myself, but a lot of people told me that coppers are horrible to motorists.

I’d much rather have a traffic officer than a camera. They are trained and can differentiate between appropriate and inappropriate speed. Cameras cannot and just print out invoices.

True, I prefer motorways that are mainly patrolled by plod than the ones that just have speed cameras every 10 yards (greater Manchester) because you can’t just can’t overtake safely and quickly with them.

I think the 20's are advisory only. Could be different in Scotland though.

We had one of these introduced last month outside a nearby school. From 60...down to 20....needs care. But, there is a nationa;l speed limit sign just beyond the school in each direction/

If they sign has a red circular border then it is mandatory. If it doesn’t it’s advisory.

In West Yorkshire loads of residential streets are now mandatory 20mph.

A warning is fair enough. Close to a school is one area where I do agree on a very low speed limit.
Agreed Roger- when I did my IAM my examiner ( Ex police traffic chap) told me a story or two of what he’d had to deal with in his career outside schools , just not nice at all

Here we have flashing 40s outside schools with 60 or 50 at the end of the zone, depending on the road type (main or local). However, nobody ever seems to check if you can actually see the signs from your car. One 60 I pass regularly has been hidden by tree branches for at least 10 years, even though it has been reported. A flashing 40 in the same area has a cross street name sign about a metre in front of it, so it can only be seen when you are almost alongside it. Another one is positioned so close to a junction that, as you turn into the street it applies to, your car roof blocks it, and you need a convertible (roof down) or a bike, to know the limit has changed. Still, it's all good for the revenue stream!

Does the 20mph apply during school holidays / when school is closed? I'm not sure of the rules here so always slow down.

In Oz (Queensland) there is a reduced speed limit at all schools (cops favourite spot to skulk in the bushes and trap) but it does not apply when school is closed or holidays.

Some do, some don't it depends upon the signage. If it has 20 when flashing then it's in operation when schools are in operation. If it's just a 20 in a red circle then it's always in force.

Limits are like laws there no good if people don't see them as being fair and reasonable.

True...but during the recent half term when the school near us was closed the orange lights still flashed each morning and afternoon.

I'm a big exponent of "appropriate speed", where I live it's a 30mph zone although if I did 30 I'd probably run over 10 kids but I'd be legal speed wise...

If someone did hit a child they'd most likely just put a 20 limit in which would make no difference at all as 20 could still be too much. In reality 10 mph can be more than appropriate.

Only problem with "appropriate speed" is that cameras can't work with it so don't make any money...
