Hello to all members,

i've recently acquired a soft top 1994 E320 AMG in a metallic rosewood with 94K on it. Looks nice and drives well but its going to need various bits of attention soon - so i'm familiarising myself with the engine at the moment.

I've had a 1990 300ce coupe (130k blue black met) for 8 years - best motor i've ever had!

The first question i have is that when i pull the throttle lever from inside the engine bay, i hear a hiss/sucking noise like a sharp intake of breath...is the normal? is this the throttle butterfly pulling in air or do i have a a vacuum leak or air leak of some sort. It sounds like its coming from somewhere around the black plastic manifold on top of the engine. Can't hear it when the engine is idling.

Other problems i need to address further down the line are bad fuel consumption (ok its an AMG) and K1 clutch occassional flaring (seen Mr. Fraser already).

cheers everyone, :D

Welcome Dino, not familiar with your engine but could it be air being sucked in at the metering plate?

The M104 engines do make a hissing noise, which as you say is down to the butterfly flap in the throttle body opening and the air being taken into the engine.....if you had a vacuum leak you would notice it with a dodgy idle.

Heavy fuel consumption can be down to the Charcoal filter being clogged....its fitted in the nearside wing behind the plastic cover. The filter is part of the emissions equipment and normally needs replacing every 75,000 miles and often gets over looked as part of general servicing.

Lovely car by the way and the 320 M104 engine is a peach!
