Hi folks,

I thought I should write up an intro post as I've been a lurker for some time reading some of the great technical info on this site.

My first foray into Mercs was a CLK320 which was brilliant but we sold in anticipation of moving to Slovakia for a period of time. The impression lasted though, as even though it was old and cheap when I picked it up the quality of the interior finish and the reliability was excellent, and it was fantastic fun to drive. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another.

We came back from Slovakia and then some short time after another Merc popped up for sale locally, and after booking a quick viewing I found myself with this E430 estate:

It was a brilliant car for running the dogs round in, and I ran it as my daily for about 6 months or so before the gearbox decided to go pop. I have since sourced another gearbox for it which just so happens to be mated to a 5.4l AMG lump. My parents live at an old farm, and the E430 is currently laid up awaiting the gearbox transplant. I'd like to try and get this sorted over the summer - the original plan was to drop in the AMG lump at the same time, but I think that's a tad ambitious at the moment and part of the reason that the project has been on the back burner. It seems like a bit more of an involved project than the old VW's and Honda's that I used to muck around swapping engines in.

Not long after the E430 got laid up, a friend offered me an SLK320 for scrap money. The catch was that the control arm on one side had snapped and this had resulted in the sump getting cracked and the gearbox becoming damaged. He had a spare M112 out of an E320 plus gearbox which he chucked in, and my brother and I picked this up as a project to work on together. There was no real rush on this one as it was mainly something for us to do in idle time. The old engine and box are out and the new ones in, the main issue now is slowly grinding down the starter in order to get it to fit properly as the E class engine has the hole on the wrong side. We've blanked it and drilled out the correct side for the SLK, but it's a faff as the mating surface isn't finished properly.

Finally, to bring us up to date I saved an E320 CDI from the scrapyard a couple of weekends ago. The owner hit a speed bump and burst the rad, so I hooked up the trailer and paid him a visit.

I've got a new rad for it and I'm just waiting on a water pump, then with any luck it should see the road again. It seems fairly clean underneath so it definitely deserves a chance!

The OM613 is new to me, which is what has spurred me on to introduce myself - I have some questions to ask in the relevant section, but thought I best say hi first!

Cheers,
Josh

That's a pretty healthy ratio of working to non-working cars! We were at about half and half when we had 6 running out of 12 at one point last year, but then I decided that bringing in another 7 non-runners would be a good move :D I'm slowly working my way through the backlog.. I have two BX's and a ZX that should be finished this spring, and I'll change the clutch in my Lada which will mean that will be useable for longer runs. So with the E320 CDI sorted and those few done we should be back into better numbers of running vehicles!

Some of mine have been on the go for over 12 years, the TR7 I bought in 2010, finally got that on the road last June. The 2.5 Estate is an on going project but keep that road worthy. The XM I got to recommission last April for a friend, been in his damop garage for 21 years. That's now running well. I had a couple of BX's.
I am breaking a few Triumph 2000's at present and holding down a full time job, actually I keep my full time job so I can rest :D
My projects at present are the Canter Lorry, TR7 V8, Peugeot J5 Camper, MK1 2.5pi and the XM, others that require work is my SL55, and the Money Pit
Keep up the good work Josh ;) What area are you in?
Oh and I am looking for another car

I had a bit of a reset before we went to Slovakia, so I shed all the long term projects bar one back then, but I had some cars that had nearly spanned a decade with me! When we came back to the UK I went for a short period of time where I didn't keep any projects and just ran a company car in an attempt to be normal, but I quickly found I was bored and miserable without some projects on the go. Yet again, one project became two, two became three... You know how it goes! Buying a 16ft twin axle car trailer was probably the biggest mistake I made lol, buying and transporting non-runners is just too easy now.

I'd love an XM, we drive to see family in Slovakia regularly and I have dreams/nightmares of loading the family and dogs up into a diesel XM estate and doing the journey in that. If the E320 CDI behaves itself then it will be finding itself travelling to Italy on our summer holiday and then probably being the go to car for our continental travels.

I'm down in Seaford, East Sussex. At the moment we have a mk1 Honda Insight as my commuter and a Shogun Sport V6 as my family/tow car, a 1979 Lada 1300 as a cheap tax/MOT exempt classic, and my partner runs a mk3 Clio which the family has now outgrown and will be replaced by the E320 CDI

As for projects in various states of completion, there's a BX hatch and three BX estates, a ZX estate, Skoda Favorit estate, Volvo 940 Estate, Zastava Yugo 311, ZAZ 968, the E430 and SLK320 I previously mentioned, Audi 100 Avant, mk4 Honda Prelude and last but not least a Subaru Legacy Outback H6.

I'm kept quite busy in my 'spare' time! :D

I have own cars that I've forgotten about, only to be reminded years later by a mate that I already own that model
A couple too I owned in NZ, left and apparently still own them......the garage owner in my town sorted those out for us, luckily.
Trouble with me, if it's not in view.......Just remembered, I have a 262c. Bought that 2 years ago
The XM is a 3ltr petrol Executive model, lovely car.
I had a count up of all the cars I've owned since 76 about 4 years ago, 176 odd, in the last 4 years 10 or 20, can't remember
I've had some nice ones and some real dogs too. Lol
Keep up the good work.
Oh yer, I've had a few trailers as well, though now I've up graded to an old curtainsider/recovery truck. Comes in very handy ;)
