Hi folks, I'm Les and I'm totally new to this forum. Last year I bought a 1979 silver 450SLC LWB hard top ... for my wife. Long story, won't bore you.

Sadly, my local mechanic has just given it a thorough medical and says it has been botched in various ways in the past and needs much work and money spending on it.

So what I'm wondering is - can anyone on the forum help me with info on Mercedes-trained mechanics, specialist welders, etc., in my neck of the woods? I live in Sheringham on the North Norfolk coast.

Alternatively, is there a place on this forum for finding an enthusiast who might be interested in acquiring the vehicle for a restoration project?

I'll get some photos done and post them here.

Any feedback will be appreciated. Thanks

Bad Luck. How much you asking for it and can you be a bit more specific, please, about what the mechanic found?

Try Autotechnic at Chedgrave near Loddon, they are all MB trained and their charges are reasonable.(Compared to dealer).

Ask for a quote, and as they do service a lot of the older vehicles (only MB) they may just have a contact to sell yours if it proves to be an expensive fix.

Thanks for the info!

Brilliant - never expected to find somewhere in Norfolk! Will give Autotechnic a call as soon as I can. Many thanks for the info.

number question

Thanks again people for your help. Can't tell you exactly what needs doing, since I'm working abroad 4 weeks out of 8. The mechanic called my wife on Friday and she emailed me, so I can't talk to him until Tuesday cos of the holiday weekend. Then I should be able to tell you more. And then I can call Autotechnic for some advice as well.

BTW, I notice a lot of numbers of the W107 variety in your posts. I'm not aware of or familiar with these numbers, so just out of interest can somebody give me the (short version of the) story on MB model numbers?

We also have a V reg Vito van, which I realise doesn't really count - but it's a Versa conversion (side & rear windows, carpet, three rear seats, folding rear ramp, etc) and my wife and I both love it! 2 litre petrol engine, 5-speed manual, dash-mounted gearstick. Sadly, it's RED. Makes it v. easy to spot in a car park!
