Driving back from my parents this evening, after about 5 minutes, I noticed a grinding/scraping noise coming from the front drivers side wheel when I turned hard left at a junction. It didnt seem to make the noise when I turned right, but after a while the grinding noise started again this time when turning the wheel both left and right......any ideas please :(:(

Trust you to be able to identify a grinding noise so readily - especially late in the evening.

In the absence of a warning light for brakepads (and I think your servicing guru might have warned you anyway) sounds as though you may have picked up a foreign body between the pad and the disc in that corner - bit of grit perhaps? With so much rain recently that would not be unlikely.

As Alex above and sounds plausible, other than that, out with the jack and lift that side up and spin the wheel

It's not you grinding your teeth over the ESSEX girl remarks is it Sarah ! Seriously now it might just be salt and grit wedged in there , theres tons of it on the roads round here . Try lightly dabbing the breaks to see if theres any change in the noise next time you get the noise , it could also be a slight ridge on your brake disc's and your brake pads worn down enough to make contact with the disc but not enough to put the brake warning light on .

The noise seems to be coming more from the steering mechanism behind the wheel rather than the wheel itself, suggestion is that it could be the power steering fluid level that is low, where will I find the reservoir in my engine to check this ? (tried to download pic of my engine but lost the will to live trying :()

I have a feeling its on the bulk head firewall,,if you look on the picture there is a pipe 47 in the lower picture goig toward the left to a part with no number,, that is the steering pump, the tank either sits on top there abouts or on the fire wall,, you cant miss the pump as the fan belt goes around the pulley on the front.

The belt slipping could be the noise that you heard if the alternator was under load as it was a cold night

What picture are you referring to Malc?

It may be worth checking the ball joints - these can make a racket while steering.

Hi Sarah.

Any joy?

Think that it maybe I need new shocks on the drivers side because the noise can also be heard when I bounce the front of the car when stationary, but would appreciate any ideas please

Hi MissyD,

As mentioned briefly, I reckon your problem is the metal part of the brake pad (backing) is touching the edge of the brake disc.

As a disc wears, it usually leaves a 'step' on its' edge - this is the part of the disc that is contacting with the pad or pads.
The pads are probably not worn enough to need replacing yet.

Remove your wheel cover and see if you can feel through the wheel onto the disc surface with your finger,
as you move it outwards you should feel the step I am referring to.
A workshop solution is to file this off with a coarse file.

Hope this helps, if not let me know.

Hi, I had exactly the same thing just before christmas, I took off the wheel (drivers side) could see nothing obviously wrong, removed the brake pads, rubbed brake pads over some glasspaper to remove the glaze, re assembled with a small amount of copperslip on the back of the pads, and put it all back together and hey presto!!! its still the same.....NO only joking no noise at all, hopefully yours will be as easy as mine.:)

I know this thread was started about a month ago so it's probably sorted by now but I thought I'd throw my tuppence worth in as well;

I had the exact same symptoms on mine (noise on turn in and going over speed bumps/pushing down on the wing, no noise at higher speeds) and it was the Ball Joint.

I went through all the other stuff mentioned, no joy. The noise was intermittent, sometimes it seemed to come from the steering column but noise travels. I couldn't find any wear on the joint but as it was the only thing left I changed it.

I think that you are right on this,,we have had 6 or7 of the same faults in the last week

Hello Sarah.

It is probably your lower front ball joint and thats what I am going to check when I see your car soon.
