Hello,

After a spirited run in my T124 E280 yesterday I noticed something hanging from the exhaust. When I looked closer I noticed that what looks and feels like hair was coming out of the tail pipe. I pulled it away (about 30 cm long piece and say 40 strands) and there seems to be more up there.
Has anyone any idea what this is or am I trapped in a Stephen King novel and its the hair of a victorian ghost?
Thanks
Toby

Sounds like the wadding from your silencer. Time for a new one.

I remember a friends mother had this on an old Maestro about 15 years ago. And that is pretty much what it was.

Now there's a quality car.........

I had an old Cavalier E reg that did this, only it happened on the motorway and a great lump of it blocked the exhaust. This restricted the already lightning performance from its 1600 cc engine and gave me a bit of a fright. I pulled over and yanked it all out and it sounded proper throaty from then on :) My gf hated it though. Ahhh, those was the days..........

Often its glass fibre, so be carefull with it or you will itch.
Its used to absorb sound.

Likely to be an aftermarket exhaust.

For a replacement, buy the real thing, last you 10 years and will be an additional selling point if/when you dispose of vehicle.

Thanks chaps - wondered if that was the case as the exhaust has been a bit raspy for a while. Time to shop around for a rear silencer.

IIRC I paid about 100 quid for a premium GSF back box. It's an easy DIY job too.

Don't throw the old one out till the new one is on. I needed the extract the sleeve from the old pipe to fit inside the new one but it was very corroded and took quite a bit of swearing to get it out.

haha - I thought of The Ring and the girl crawling out of the tv when i saw it! Suppose loose wadding makes more sense!

Will get taken to another world when changing the silencer when it arrives - a world of grazed knuckles, WD40 soakes sleeves and bad language!

Just before you part with the hard earned, i bought a gsf pattern part rear silencer for my now rehomed 300 diesel 124, and it seemed well made, but i regretted fitting it as the noise from the exhaust was thoroughly unpleasant and wished i bought the genuine article which was only about £15 dearer. The replacement was slightly smaller bore at the exit pipe and sounded raspy in an unpleasant way.

I haven't heard the replacements on the petrols, but could be worth asking before purchase.

thanks for the advice but my choice will be down to price at the moment. Just have to do that old British Leyland fix for noisy 70's cars - turn the radio up!
