recent MOT failed on the handbrake (only at 10% effectiveness). its an automatic so the handbrake is really a footbrake:rolleyes:

can i tighten it? or do i need to get a new one?

if its a new one how much do you reckon it'll be?

thanks

The best way is to remove the back wheels, back off the parking brake shoes then remove the rear drum/disc. now you can see the condition of the linings. if they are OK lubricate and make sure that all moving parts are free, and not tight, this also applies to the linkage and cables back to the mech; in the center of the car. After refitting the drums take up the adjustment through the hole until the drum will not turn, then back it off until it just turns.
This is normal servicing for this condition.

Your not advocating oiling the brake linings are you ;). Next you will be recommending putting sand in the bearings to make them grip. :D  :p
