SPRINTER 308D 1997 2.3
Please help while I have some hair left. I have a Sprinter 308D, 1997 2.3. Owned for 7 years, it recently failed it's PSV because of lack of handbrake. I have replaced the disc backplates, the combined disc/drum, the handbrake shoes, the "spreaders" and all 3 cables. When first adjusted everything is good, but as soon as I move the van, even a few yards, the handbrake lever comes right up to the top. I have repeated the adjustments until I have went potty - still the same result. Only thing I noticed was that the leading shoe on the nearside and the trailing shoe on the offside appear to move towards the outer edge (drive flange) side of the drum. The retaining pins are in place and the shoe can be poked back via the adjustment hole.
Help, running out of sanity (and valium)

Have you got the springs on wrong or have you set it up wrong, the cable must be backed right off before you attempt the shoe adjusters

Thanks for reply. When replacing everything I done one side at a time, using the other as a template so don't think it is the springs. I just finished doing a readjustment as you suggested, unfortunately no change, great firm handbrake, about 2 clicks at first, then any movement, back or forwards results in the lever coming up to the top.

I think that you'll have to strip the handbrake down again and have a closer look.

It's possible that the hook and lever at the end of the handbrake cable, where it enters the handbrake drum and actuates the brake shoes has seized into place.

I had this on mine and had to give it a thorough rub down to remove rust and brake debris. I then used anti-seize compound on the pivot pin and the inside surface of the "lever" section.
