Thanks malcolm, this has been niggling me for a while now - however;
I have checked the serial numbers from my transmission (a la russian website) and my transmission appears to be a much later serial no. than the point of introduction
Would the 'mod' be the same (716647 01 246505 transmission) ??

Hi Rob, from the last number in the list I put up, MB fitted a shorter stand pipe so that you cant put as much oil in.
There should be a plate on the gearbox with the serial on, this mod came out jan 01 so only affects cars before this date anyway

Interesting - how do you find this stuff out???
I'll try to check the serial on the side of the box over the weekend, but assuming i have the shorter stand pipe - is there a fix for hard 1-2 changes when cold??

thanks

How do I find it out, I just take a guess and hope to get it right, if the oil has never been changed in 135K it would not do any harm, No other fix listed

Malcolm

I also get hard shifts from 1-2 when the car is cold, though my gearbox is of the 722.6 variety. Would the same modification work on my car too? If not can you check if there were any similar updates for my gearbox.

Thanks

Unfortuntly not, the 722.6 is a auto box. this mod is for the manual transmission.

The Hard shifts in the 722.6 box is normal and intended to warm up the CAT as quickly as possible, so it is normal and OK

Hi, my box is stiff getting into first when cold (not second) - what is the size of the drain or filler plug - allen key or normal?
Mine's a W203 manual, 2002

This might be resurecting an old thread, but hey..
We have a 320 SLK early 2002, manual. This car has ,ever since we bought it been difficult to get into first gear. I enquired about this "mod" a while ago. + had it done at the last service.
Unforunately it didnt make any difference whatsoever...
In fact its now becoming harder to select 2nd gear aswell...:(:(:(
Maybee its just the cold weather.. As my BMW is having similar problems.. Maybee the oil is too thick in the morning...:rolleyes:

Could it just be the linkage out,,there was a further mod on the 1st gear shaft, but your car is quite late, any way I will check on this

Not wishing to nit-pick, but the numbers quoted by Malcolm are the refill capacities once drained. The actual amount of oil to remove is 300ml, meaning that the early boxes will contain 1.2l after reduction and the later ones 1.5l after reduction, and the level will be approx 10mm below the level plug.

Didn't want someone removing almost all their oil and leaving only 300ml to run with...

This is exactly the problem I have had now for a while, switching from first to second gear when the car still is cold, is a bit difficult. The car (w203 from 2003) is driven 172 000 km now, and as far as I know the oil in the gearbox has never been changed so I went to the shop and got a time for changing it. At the same time I asked how much oil there should be in the gearbox, and I was stunned as they said "only 1,2 liters". That seems a bit too little :) if one have to reduce 1,2 liters in order to get it moore smooth.
Will have to wait and see if the oil change makes anything better.

Sincerely,
Anders
